Yet another no spark thread UPDATED

Well guys, haven't been posting because everything has been running great with the 4Runner. That is until the other day.

To make a long story short the 4Runner suddenly died while a buddy of mine was driving it around town. He said the engine quit running and wouldn't run. It will crank all day long.

We towed it back to his house and have started the trouble shooting. It seems I have no spark, checked by pulling the coil wire and putting a spark plug in it, holding the threads to the block. Also used a spark tester that you hold to the outside of the wire and it lights up when spark is sent. Got nothing.

So I'm thinking coil or ignitor. Replaced the coil today with one from the parts store. Still not running, when my buddy gets off work we will check for spark. It's a little hard to crank the truck and be under the engine bay with only one person. Now for the questions.

1. My old coil read 1.3 ohms resistance across the poles, haynes says it should be .5 - .7, the new coil reads 1.6 ohms. Any of you guys get high reading on your coils?

2. Didn't have my multimeter this afternoon but used a circuit tester to test for power, got power on the line going to the ignitor. But with the ignitor plugged up it shows power on both positive and negative poles of the coil. Is this normal? I read a post were someone mentioned this and no one said it wasn't normal.

3. Hopefully going to have time to run to pull-a-part tomorrow and look for a v6 toyota so I can grab an ignitor or two to try. Is there a way to test the ignitor? I saw someone saying look for said wire from ecu, etc etc. Anyone have wire colors on those or a dumbed down version?

Don't have my manual with me right now, but I remember that there's a way to check the ignitor. Check the distibuter, too. When this happened to me, it was my ignitor, but you can bet I went after the cheap stuff first!

If you dig out your manual can you please post the ignitor test procedure.

Looked all through my Haynes and the FSM and don't see any ignitor test.

Went to the junk yard today and out of 3 v6 4Runners there were no ignitors.

I had heard that ignitors go out so in my last 4runner I carried a spare. The original died in my druveway (well wouldn't start/spark) just as I had to take my Dad to the airport. I threw in the spare (junkyard part) and got him to his flight on time. Didn't have time or knowledge to test it.

That is pretty much the point I am at. But unfortunately there isn't a junk yard in the area with an ignitor. The only v6 Yotas I have found have had the coil and ignitor taken.

Got one last source to check tomorrow and after that I am sticking a wanted ad up on the forums. Hope I dont have to bite the bullet and buy one from the parts store.

I've already decided that the next one I see in a junkyard I am grabbing for my spare parts box.

Sorry this took so long. Keep in mind that this is out of a 1983 FSM...
It didn't scan, but up at the top, item #1 is: Turn Ignition Switch On

Thanks for the scan. I'll give it a try tomorrow and see how it goes. The 88 FSM has nothing in it about testing the ignitor.

Junk yards are very high tech and can find anything you want if there's something in it for them. They are very connected with other yards.
Also you can try some online junkyards. Some have lists of vehicles in inventory and are eager to go out and check to see if they have what you need.

Well guys. Just got the NEW igniter in and put it on the truck. Charged the battery and still no go.

Got my buddy giving me a hand tonight when he gets off work so we can hook the spark tester to it and go from there.

Since it seems the igniter isn't the problem what am I looking at replacing next? Distributor? ECU?

Where should I continue the troubleshooting? It is pretty evident that spark is not leaving the coil to go to the distributor.

Engine is showing NO codes thrown.

Desert: The junkyards around here are very low tech and very unhelpful in anything. There is one that just does trucks and SUVs in the area and they are the biggest set of unhelpful people I have ever seen. Whenever I go in the owner just wants to tell me about how much better all his stuff is than mine and how he has a $5k stereo system in his truck. Pull-a-part in this area is pretty unhelpful also when it comes to finding anything, this one here has gotten busted several times for buying stolen vehicles and putting them on the lot without checking to see if they are stolen.

OK well I am guessing that you have not checked the VAF/MAF sensor I was helping a guy the other day with this same issue and this was his problem. so I have included the link to FSM'S as well https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123...-url-s-102344/ this one is to yotatech
so you will need to find the diagnosis specs.

I will also say that you can run most of these tests by putting straight pins in the connectors on the wire side so the go inside and make contact with the plug and allow you to leave them plugged in and see what is going on.

read through all to get a better understanding of possible issues!!
