year comparisons
Ok so this definitly belongs here in the newbie section. Like i've mentioned before, I've never owned a truck...only cars. So I want you to tell me what years out of the 80's came up with the best trucks. I need to know what to look for and would like to know common problems with certain years. please and thank you.

The big changes were in '85 when Fuel Injection was introduced in the 4Runner and '86 when the solid axle was replaced with independent front suspension.
If you're looking for a trail rig then, the '85 4Runner is like the holy grail - fuel injected and solid axle.

Then whatever you can find will work. The carbureted 22R is a great motor, if it is running poorly, it's pretty much your own fault - super easy to work on, no computer to get in the way, however, you will have to work on it keeping it in tune. The fuel injected 22RE will require less attention, but when it does require maintenance, it'll take more than a little turn with a screwdriver.
Go with a 4cylinder, not a 6 (the 3VZE or 3.slow) and avoid the automatics at all costs (not that they're bad - just incredibly poorly matched to the motors)

You'll pay more for the holy grail truck Troy talks about in AZ because it is uber popular down there, so if you just wanna tow the quad (or are you putting it in the bed???) Then somethin' else. Thougth I garuntee if ya go wheeling with us, you'll want a truck before ya know it!

For what your wanting in your add... thank me later and get a 86'+ or even a low to mid 90's. They are much, much easier to find, have less miles, are inexpensive, have more options, smoother ride, 22RE, etc...

agreed. for 3100 you should be able to pick something up in the 90+ years. have you been watching craigslist?

yeah i know there are a ton of 2wd's, thats the one thing i'm not willing to give up. I have been looking all over craigslist and the truck trader...every day in fact. I have called on many and it seems like they either think it is gold or its pushing 300k. I'm just gonna be picky and there is nothing anybody can do about it. haha. I have a reliable car to drive until I find the right truck so no use in buying one that isn't what i want. =) I will look into these years then, i drove a 91 it was really nice and it was the original owner but it had no AC as the guy bought in wisconsin...i'm not willing to do that. lol.

I have nothing but good things to say about my 86 4x4. It is very easy to work on. I am just getting into the 4x4 scene, but with general knowlege of cars and the haynes book, these things are easy. I get 25 mpg on highway with 32/11.5 tires and can tow my trailer and bike easily. my .02 i'm sure you'll find somthing. Just keep looking. They pop up every day.
