winch question
A local off roader had a nice warn winch, forgive me for not remembering the exact model. I think it was a 9.5xp but I could be wrong.
After a while, he got it too full of bog and water and lo and behold it stopped working when he needed it. Off it came because the rebuild cost was more then this:
http://www.titanwinches.com/index.ph...od&productId=3
Now that's rated about the same all the way across but with a slightly higher gear reduction. And the cost is a lot less then I can find a warn for. This guy swears by this winch, but sometimes I think misery loves company.
Has anybody had any experience at all with this winch? Any insights?

All you gotta do is find out who's re-brand it is...
Most winches today, with the exception of their higher ends are re-brands.
Gorilla is one I know.
And to this day, I believe not ONE electric winch is rated for Continuous Duty...
The only one I know that is rated Continuous Duty is the MileMarker Hydro unit that will drag you home tree by tree as long as it has a pump source.

to me that looks like a re-branded EP12 Superwinch slightly different line speeds probably due to the fact Superwinch doesn't want to compete with it or it's got a slightly different motor on it.

I can't possibly keep up with all the winches out there, but one thing keeps popping up...
And that's a "permanent magnet motor" It seems they're all cheap, and rebrands.

good advice all around. just noticing in comparison that titan doesn't list the weight of their winches. my goal is to mount it to a receiver plate and the front bumper's getting a hitch mount so whether I need to go ahead or come back, I have winch option. that ep12 looks really close and really heavy.
that smittybilt one looks decent. 12k sounds exciting but how much do I really need? I'm not winching dead weight here. One of the guys I go out with took two atv winches, built brackets and stacked them on top of each other and then just chains them to whatever he's winching. Kinda redneckish but it works.

a general rule for selecting a winch is at least 1 1/2 X the weight of the vehicle, so a 4,000 lb truck you would want at least a winch rated for 6000. Most people I have seen at least go for 2X just in case they get into some nasty stuff.
here is a good read for you. http://www.4wheelparts.com/off-road/winchadvisor.aspx
