What are the weak spots on a 1989 4x4 Pickup?
Hi guys.
In another thread I asked about the transmission of my 1989 toyota 4x4 pickup. It turns out that the tranny needs to be rebuilt or replaced, but before I do either, are there any particular weaknesses on this model truck that I should pay special attention to? It's due for inspection, so I'll ask the mechanic to carefully go over any trouble areas that you guys suggest.
The body and frame are in great shape--amazing actually for the age. But I don't want to dump good money after bad, if there are other likely problems.
So, I'll appreciate any tips you have for what I should pay special attention to.
Thanks guys.

About 85-90% of the people on the site will tell you the 22re is a great lil motor. So is the 5spd when in good shape. You said the frame and body was in good shape, so that's one weakness answered, the body above the tires and the cab panels usually suffer from rust. Other than that, if the truck was taken care of ok, I can't seem to think of anything else to comment.

lower part of fender wells and beds are weak points for rust. Where the truck from? If the area gets snow and uses salt, check for rust on bed. Im on my 2nd bed on my truck cause of rust and Im in colorado, no salt for ice roads here

Unless this truck has been restored or rebuilt all ready or the last owner moved up from the Southwest USA
That would be the only way it is in as good of shape as you say or think.
look at the fuel and Brake lines
If the transmission is coming out time for a new clutch and the hydraulics .
Some people take care of things others just run them into the ground who knows just what is the story in your case.
These are good Trucks but normal maintenance needs to be done.
Brakes in good shape
Driveline u-joints wheel bearings Hubs things like that all working
You just need to take it one day at a time.
Is this a long term project or your only transportation
i am not that far away if you get stuck

Nice color.
Some rustproofing like FluidFilm is a good option. Especially inside body panels and the frame. Cover any rust with a rustconverter or rust primer and paint before rustproofing
