Hi i have a 93 4runner with the 22re 5 speed standard, I want to do a motor swap to v6. what all has to be replaced to accomodate more power? front and rear difs? drive shaft? tranny, transfercase? any help would be awesome.

I really am a fan of the 22re, but im runnin 35's on stock 4:10 gears. I can do the gears but there will still be a lack of power. It is a high km 22re so not to many mods I can do for hp without damaging the engine

well thers your problem, stock gears....even the 3.slow will have problems pushing 35's. just regear and get 4.88's or 5.29's and save your self alot of money and the headache

Something is missing here. Which v6 are you talking about? 3.0, 3.4, 4.3, 3.8? The more information you provide the more help you will get

I would not recommend toyota's 3.0, it's garbage. Hardly makes better numbers than the 22re and it eats fuel.

Your best bet is a Toyota 3.4 or Chevy 4.3. There is a kit for the 4.3 Vortech that takes the headache out of it. You are on your own for the 3.4 but it's been done many a time and there is a wealth of information to fill up on.

Also consider the smooth control and awesome torque of an inline six. Do some research on the 7mge swap. You could run a turbo or two as well.

You have no idea how much trouble free you have there...

And it also seems you don't know how adding taller tires effects gearing.

...and the physics of a 4 cylinder engine.

I'd sell it to somebody that knows what you got, then buy you something with more power in it.

i would do a 3.4 swap they have great low end (much more than the 4.3) probably cause there hemi's a 7mge is also pretty cool with the 3.4 and the 4.3 you should be able to leave your drive train the same but i'm not sure about the 7mge

He has a stock 4 cylinder, so he has NO options to get a Toyota V6 except for swapping out his transmission.

Then, he prolly gets to go through all the fun of getting the right drive shafts. B/c the only obtainable one I know of is the R150 and it's CHAIN driven TC.

Then, a trans X member is questionable...

Then, all the fun of cutting off the motor mounts and re-welding them to fit the 3.4 or any other engine for that matter.

Then, there's the wiring.

The 7M was mentioned for a reason. He can use his bellhousing, and therefore transmission.

Since you basically lost .10th of a gear per inch you deviated from the stock 28" tires, your best and cheapest mod IMO is to get 5:29 or 5:71 gears in your truck to compensate...



Or, you can go through all the trouble of swapping engines (and tranny's?) and still not be happy with it b/c it's still got 3:50 gears...

The best thing to do is go to the engine swap section and start reading, all of the info you need is there.

I agree with BigBluePile, bobby_duce, and tried4x2signN:

Regear it and be done with it. You have no idea how easy you have it with that 22RE. I used to have a 3VZE 4Runner and just recently bought an '86 with a 22RE and sure it makes less power but the engine is solid and sooo easy to work on.

Gearing is more important than torque or its derivative, horsepower.

Save yourself the time, money, and headache. Gear it close to stock with 4.88:1 or 5.29:1 gears.

Is your rig for wheeling or street and you like the looks of 35's...or both? It matters.

Mine is a weekend off-road toy with 33's and 4.88 gears. I installed a new timing chain, oil pump, and water pump as well as adjusted the valves with 178k miles. The head was milled by the previous owner from an overheat issue. Thats it and it is ready for the next 100k miles.

Off-road, torque is your friend & Hp is your enemy in terms of breaking parts. Thats why the 22RE is a great engine with the right tire/gear setup. Of course on the street, I am not winning any drag races but it'll do 70mph all day long and my last tank of fuel which included one off road day got 19mpg. I'm not going to get any speeding tickets either!

Unless you are a great wrench, i like the idea of selling what you have and buying what you want with this kind of mod. Of course, if there is sentimental value in your 4Runner...

Torque is what breaks parts. When the raw force of the motor is fighting a tough obstacle, something's gotta give.

Torque is also your friend, you can let the torque do the work with less chance of bogging down or stalling.

From your question you have alot of research to do !!

Before you decide what to do.

If you want to do a swap by all means go for it .

The major things sometimes fall into place often times not.

I would suggest the Toyota Electrical manual for your vehicle and also the one for the year the engine comes out of.

If you go non -Toyota track down the electrical manual from that manufacture.

All in all you might want to take the advice of regearing or just buying what it is you want.
