Water Pump Confusion????

When I was having the headgasket done on my 4runner, I bought all my own parts. One of them was a waterpump. I purchased the one meant for the automatic transmission, the one WITHOUT the bypass tube. Well I gave it to my mechanic and when he returned my 4runner to me he said it was the wrong one so he had to go buy another. He had to buy one WITH a bypass tube, the one shown to use with the manual transmission. The old one that came off my 4runner HAS a bypass tube on it. My question is, did he put the right waterpump on there? Does an automatic use the bypass tube and a manual doesn't? If he did do it right, then all of advance auto parts records are wrong.

Anybody want to buy a brand new water pump WITHOUT the bypass tube??

From what I have seen, it has nothing to do with auto or manual, it has to do with whether or not you have an oil cooler. That is not a bypass tube, it flows the coolant to the oil cooler on the driverside of the block.

If you scroll down to the waterpumps you will see that there are actually 4 different waterpumps for the 3vze from 88-95, depending on year and whether or not it has the outlet tube.

I would think you get rid of the waterpump here or ebay. Ebay may be the fastest way to get rid of it.

Edit: where did you purchase your original wp?

Kyle, have you looked into returning it? I would especially if they said that was the one you needed. That site that you posted in your ad has a return policy. I would seriously check into it. That's a bummer man.

I actually just posted it up for sale here. I got it from Advance Auto Parts but I seemed to have lost my receipt and the computer at advance can't pull it up. Figured someone up here might be able to use it more then the floor of my room could.

The Advance Auto Parts website shows the same part number for 88-95 3.0s

They won't let me return it because I have no proof of actually buying it from them. The computer can't pull it up under my name and I lost my receipt.

Sucks that im out an extra 50 bucks, AND am gonna have to pay dealer pricing for my new water pump.

If you paid with a debit card or credit card, you can look your purchase up through them. I wouldn't let them get away with giving you the wrong part, even if it isn't the money, they shouldn't get away with that.

I pay for almost everything with cash. I've got a debit card but it stays tucked in tightly in my wallet. I get into too much trouble whem anything I want (that I have money for) is just a swipe away.

I'll go back up there tonight and see if I can fight it more. I need to find when a manager is on duty, and not the variety of high school students.

Talking to the manager, is probably your best bet. I'm the opposite, cash burns a hole right through my pocket. Taking out the card and knowing there is going to be a paper trail makes me think more (getting your statement and seeing how much you spend on useless crap), therefore I spend less if I don't carry cash.

Well, I called up there and a manager is working tonight so I will see what he says. If all else fails, someone's gonna get a deal on a new water pump. I wouldn't mind selling it to a fellow yotatech member for cheap.
