I am wondering if anyone on here has a step by step guide on how to remove the A340H transmission from a 1995 4runner. I have a rear main seal leak, that has gotten worse over the past couple weeks. (enough to make me nervous to take it out off road). I have the FSM saved on my computer, but it really just shows pics. No real instruction except how to make sure the torque converter is set up right. I also have a haynes manual. If there are any other sources with detailed info on this maintenance, I would appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks. Any idea how much this should cost assuming everything goes according to plan. I know I need the seal, a new dipstick gasket, and tranny fluid. I'm probably gonna drain the engine oil too, so, engine oil. I'm estimating about $150. Am I even close?

thanks for the good laugh. The toughest part about the tranny removal is the two top bolts at the top of the trans to the block. other than than a haynes is some what useful and should get you through it. If not I would seriously suggest having someone that has an idea of what is going on or pay someone to do it. good luck. How much and you bench. its either you can bench alot of have a trans jack. if neither get one of the too or definitely a buddy. if neither of the three pay someone. again good luck

 

Dipstick gasket? You mean drain plug gasket? You don't need to drain fluid from the engine or the tranny if you don't want. I did a full clutch job for under 100 bones (including the clutch disc, pressure plate, TO bearing, pilot bearing, and rear main).

 

Sorry fellas. I couldn't figure out another way to put it but dipstick gasket. The FSM shows like an O-ring at the tranny dipstick tube, that has to be replaced. I have access to a tranny jack, (holds 2000 lbs.) so i think i am good there. I also have about 5 feet of ratchet extensions so those top bolts are accessible. Thanks again. I am trying to gather all the info I can get before I start. Wanna do it right the first time.

BTW. the less than $100 made me happy.

 

I bought the clutch kit off a friend for 70 bucks and the seal was cheap. Not sure how the auto is set up, but w/ my manual I found it easiest to get the top tranny bolt through the cab.
