tranny problems: shifting

Newb warning: I have a G58 and have a hard time shifting from a complete stop to 1st and usually there is a delay to all other gears (not smooth). if i try to shift it to 1st, it grinds, but sometimes i get lucky. There are times though when i reverse and have problems shifting to 1st, I usually shut the engine off, shift it to 1st and start the truck back up. Also when i'm in stop and go traffic i just hold the clutch in...gets really irritating. when i shift it to neutral and try to get it in 1st it usually grinds, thats why i hold in the clutch. If i don't hold the clutch in, i have to use the shut off method. Is there anything that i should worry about from holding the clutch in instead of shifting to neutral? even when the truck is off sometimes i have a hard time shifting from neutral to 1st or reverse. any thoughts?

I'm thinking alignment problems with clutch and flywheel...but i'm no expert...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a new shifter seat and bushing? Or searched the forum for your issues?

Sounds like a classic case of your clutch not disengaging all the way. Check your clutch pedal bracket first, and slave cylinder second. You could try bleeding the clutch hydraulic system, but it's not likely to fix the problem for good.

The original brackets like to crack in the top left hand corner (as your sitting in the driver's seat), and will allow your pedal pivot to shift instead of pushing the piston all the way in the clutch master cylinder.

The slave cylinders also go out commonly, and either problem will not allow your clutch to disengage all the way. When that happens, you will have exactly the problem described.

You could also check the clutch pedal adjustment before you replace any parts, but that's also not likely to be the problem if it was fine before.

And waskillywabbit is right. This problem has been covered countless times in this forum.

The only way you could have alignment problems with your clutch and flywheel is if the clutch cover is loose; the transmission isn't bolted tight to the motor block; or if you have a bent crankshaft or input shaft. If any of these problems existed, you would have far worse problems than difficulty shifting.

k figure i'll change out slaves and master, shifter seat and bushing. If that don't work then I'll probably drop the trans (maybe swap for w56) and go from there. Thanks for the tips fellas

What ever happened? Did you have to swap the trans? Did you find out what the problem was when you took off the trans?

I've got a 1986 22R w/G52 manual 5spd that has the same problem as you but mine shakes when starting out in reverse. Hope it worked out.

Hey 86, progress stalled because I had to take care of "financial needs" aka BILLS! Even as cheap as slave/master cylinder are...I still have to budget around them. I will update this thread with my findings though..

Not to sound completely new or anything but I've been searching and can't figure out how do you bleed the clutch system? I'm having some of the same problems but they are only occasional and I'm thinking I've got air in the line.

I've been having this same problem, '99 Tacoma 3.4L 4x4. I've replaced the master and slave cylinders and bled the system thoroughly. No luck. Just thought I'd add to what you've been discussing here.

I have problems getting my truck into first if I am driving above 10-15, when I try, it makes a grinding noise even though the clutch is all the way in. I got it check out at a Toyota dealer and I was told my syncronisors in the tranny were bad. It also sometimes grinds when I try to put it in reverse even when I'm stopped. Your symptoms kinda sounded the same so I thought I would share.
