Tranny Problems

First off, I'm not too good with trannys, I dont completely understand how they work yet since I havent had one to tear into and fiddle with. Now the problem-- I have a '93 22re 5spd 4x4, drives/runs excellent with 143K miles. The problem started last week when i was about to pass someone. I down shifted into 4th, got into the other lane, accelerated and didnt get enough power to pass them like i used to. The engine revved way up, but my speed didnt increase. as soon as i let off the gas, it was okay. then the rest of that day i didnt give very much gas because i was scared it might happen again. Now, fourth gear is only good for driving and accelerating slow, i cant floor it like i used to and be around someone in like 2 seconds. Now 5th gear is starting to do the same if i give it too much gas but not as bad. Is that the gears themselves going out? or the clutch...? I just want to know what i need to have the mechanic check/repair. Thank you.
