I have a 1992 Toyota sr5. It shifts hard, ecspecially when its been sitting over night. The more I drive it during the day it warms up and doesnt shift quiet as hard. Any ideas what this might be? thanks

If manual trans do you mean hard/stiff clutch action, hard to get into first or reverse, or hard to get into any gear until it warms up.

If it's the last one it might be time to change the fluid. I hear Redline MT-90 works good in these transmissions and makes it easier to shift when cold.

Sorry. I meant when truck has been driven. It seems not to jerk as bad after it's been running a little while. If it's been sitting for a long period of time...let's say a couple hours...when I shift into drive it jerks pretty good and as I'm going down the road as it's shifting it jerks but if it hasn't set long it doesn't shift near as hard when I put it on drive or going down the road.

I've only had it a week and a half. It has done it since I have had it this short amount of time. I was just hoping it's not a major problem. It had been warm here last two days. 70. That is unusual though. It's usually high in 40s low in 20s. It does it no matter the temp. It has 133,000 miles on it. Original motor. 1992. It has plenty transmission fluid. It runs fine. Just concerned about that. Thanks

I don't know much about transmissions but owners tend to be not so good at maintenance on transmissions and gear fluids. There might be some junk stuck in the valvebody. You might want to take it in and have a flush done. Alot of shops will just change the fluid a couple times and install a new filter. That isn't a flush.

I wouldn't recommend a transmission flush. Heard to many bad things about them. My friend had a shop talk him into doing a trans flush and on his way home he lost 3rd, 4th, and reverse.

Red face

You just bought this truck Was it warm out ?/

This problem did not show up in your road test inspection?? you did drive it before buying??

What does the fluid look and smell like??

I have seen fluid never changed that has so much moisture it gets ice crystals siting over night in below freezing temps.

I am not a big fan of Automatics.

Who knows perhaps one of the past owners thought it needed a shift kit.

Sounds like it's more than a shift kit. It is giving indications from what I have read so far of being in need of help. If it shifted like this when you bought it then I fear you bought a rig that needs transmission help (possible rebuild or replace). Does your fluid smell burnt. If you pull your dip stick and smear a bit on a white piece of paper what color is it? Can you take a pick of said smear and post it on here.

The problem with a transmission flush is that if the tranny is on its last legs it can cause it to die. Automatics need good consistent service. If neglected they have a tendency to die when somebody tries to catch them back up on service.

Do you know anybody that works at a local shop that could test drive it for you to give you a second opinion?

Good luck hope this helps.
