The 06 4Runner did not have an elocker in the rear diff. The 03-09 4Runners didn't get the Elockers untill 08 or 09.

I'm not sure about compatibility but I'd order up a diff gasket from a 96-02 4Runner and one for the newer 4Runners and check the stud count and location differences. May get lucky.

short answer is: if they're both V6 diffs, and neither are factory 4.88s, then yes you can make the 06 e-locker work in your 90.

long answer is here:

Made sense to me.

You can put an 06 Tacoma elocker diff in an early truck with some modification (ie cutting the notch, and welding the support plate) They almost the same bolt pattern (except the two longer studs) and driveshaft flange pattern.

Also, Toyota did not offer the Elocker in the 4Runner from 2001-2009. When they introduced the 5th Gen for the 2010 model year, they brought back the Elocker.

Wikipedia, now THERE is a reliable source

Although they were released in late 2009, they are a 2010 model year 4Runner.

Toyota didn't offer Elockers until the 5th generation 4Runner was released. I think that wikipedia article is merely confusing. They are talking about the 2010 4Runner as having the Trail edition options with locker option.

Example:
http://autos.aol.com/cars-Toyota-4Runner-2009/overview/

Note that the V8 was still an option for the 2009 model year. 5th Gen 4Runners no longer have a V8 option.

So you wanna use the ...

"4Runner: A new Trail Edition has a long list of outdoorsy extras, including a locking rear differential, Bilstein shocks, tubular step bars and roof rack, and a TomTom detachable navigation system."

Oh look, you even posted in that thread.... Your memory must be fading

Well dammit, looks like I have been thwarted.

But now I am intrigued....why would Toyota release the locker in a 2009 body style, then change the body style a year later!?!

*edit For the record, you did say '08 which is incorrect also.

So we both were wrong, and right

For 200 bucks, you can't go wrong.

Even if it needs bearings or something. Typically those things sell for $500-$1000 at wrecking yards.

SCORE SCORE SCORE !! And he gave you the axle housing ?!? You could hawk that for 50-100. Normally I see whole Tacoma elocker axles go for ~500
