Timing chain woes

HELP!! Think I broke a timing chain.. the rotor is still turnng but it seems to be turning slower than it should. The truck just shut down in my driveway (1st time ever). at #1 TDC my rotor is a couple of clicks off ( I believe on the #4 cyl)?? the starter seems to be turning high rpms and the engine not so, it seems to have no/little compression. My fear is I have bent vlaves or piston damage, any way of telling w/out pulling the head?? Not a ace mechanic but willing to learn. It was just idling when it died I have only cranked it for a few times since.. Does it matter?? INPUT PLEASE!!

need answer on timing problem

1986 4x4 truck just quit running I turned the crank around to TDC the #1 cyl. was on #3 on the rotor. Is it common for this to happen? And just what exactly did happen, what qualifies for the term jump time? Did I shear a tooth on the crank or cam sprocket? Can I adust the time back by the distributor? What are the possibilities of valve damage or is it pretty much a combo deal when it jumps time the vlalves are bent? And how will I tell if the vlavles are bent any way of knowing while I have it torn down. Some one please give me some step by step what to do first, really dont want ot spend $900 to have it done by a shop but dont want to get in over my head I do have a garage and tools, but my mechanic ability has been more toward starters, fuel pumps and water pumps etc... briggs and stratton and such!! Am I just letting this become much more difficult than it really is. or are my concerns justified? To a fellow who is very unfamiliar with the internals of a auto-engine if I decided to get wet would I drown or would I be okay? Any first timers that were in my shoes at one time? wait'n for reply

Alot of questions.

Top dead center on the compression stroke. you are 180 off on tdc.

What happens right now if you try to start it?

BTW non interference engine=no valve damage if chain fails.

Sorry.. The starter turns alnost a whine, the engine does not seem to be turning as it should (quick enough) the rotor is turning but it does not fire or act as if it even wants to start.

Yeah...pull of the valve cover and have someone crank it over....we will know right away if you broke the chain.

Take ya 10 min at best....

Ok, 1st off this engine IS a positive interference motor. That means YES, the valves can hit the pistons. I can link you a case a chain broke in a position they never hit the pistons, but won't bother b/c all you'll find out is what I just told you.... So NEVER assume just b/c you think they hit, they did. You must rule this out with troubleshooting.

2nd, there are TWO Top Dead Centers on this engine. The same mark is used for both TDC and B-TDC. So you might have gotten #3 confused with #4 and just had the engine at B-TDC.

3rd, you need to remove the valve cover. This will let you visibly inspect the major components associated with the timing.

Anything broke or missing is self explanatory.

4th, time to bust out the Chilton's or FSM. Search google, or the FAQ's here and see if there's a place you can down load one.

The FSM is the best, well that too should be self explanatory b/c it's the book Toyota wrote for the Toyota techs.

22re pistons are dished...the valves do not hit...this guy has not done his research.

Go see if the valve train is spinning and we will go from there.

GREAT... I was just informed that it is a fact the 22re is a non-inteference engine, but you sound like you are well informed and have your ducks in row,,, hoped for the opposite, how can i truly get #1 TDC?

Oh, easy! Just make sure the cam dowel is at 12:00 with the crank pulley indicating TDC and the distributor is pointing at the #1 wire.

You can further back this up by seeing a timing chain replacement section of an FSM...

Or, I can just link you one

Nope sorry... DISHED? Is that all you got? (lol) That don't mean a dang thing!

The 3.0 is the non-interference, not the 22R/E.

well when you have the valve cover off to see if the chain is broke.....you can watch the valves on #1 when you line it up at tdc on the crank. valves closed on tdc mark is what you want.
