t-stat housing.
I have a 89 pickup , 4x4 , 22re with 5 speed tranny. I have been using the search loking for answers and have found most but one. what is the sensor looking thing on top of the t-stat housing? is it suppose(spelling?) to be plugged in? if so , where and what color wire? also , which of the two sensors in front of the intake would be the coolant temp sensor? the left or right? Thanks for the help.

If only one sensor atop the housing, it is one of the following:
- A/C high temp cutout (if A/C installed)
- A/T engine temperature (if A/T installed)
- Turbo high temperature cutout (if a 22RE turbo engine).
Pull any stored trouble codes in the engine computer for starters:

thank you very much!! the a/c has been removed. I pulled a code 14 . which is ignition signal. " no IGF signal to ECU 6-8 times in succession. " igniter and ignition coil circuit or igniter and ignition coil. would that cause it to take a few seconds to start . it cranks for almost 10 seconds before it starts then it idles rough for about 5 seconds . after that it idles fine, but when i get on the gas it sounds like it is miss firing. would a bad coil cause that? or a bad igniter? Thanks again!!

Try this for starting:

And make sure there is a good vacuum line connected to the fuel pressure regulator (on the back end of the fuel injector rail):

That is how I have mine run, as long as that vacuum line and port is not clogged internally, it should be fine. That just adjusts fuel pressure based upon engine load. Sometimes if that line is disconnected, you'll see too high a fuel pressure at idle and that can make the engine bog down until you hit around 2000 RPM or so.
