stock 4.56 gears?

So in my understanding, Some toyota pickups came stock with 4.56 gears. I heard it was more common in the V6 models. I knw that nearly all of our trucks out there have 4.10's but I would like to know how to tel if my truck came exuiped with factory 4.56s. I have a 91' ex-cab V6 that had 31" tires on it when i got it, which i have replaces with more 31's. if i were to guess, i woud say the gearing feels stock, but that's just a guess. The reason I realy would like to know this is because I need to replace my front diff it was in bad shape when I got it and now it's in worse so i'm getting a craigsist diff. i don't want to mismatch my gears. And if i ever want to step up to 33's in the future i wouldn't rn them on 4.1's bt i might on 5.56's. any hlp woud be appreciated, thanks.

If you have stock 4.10 gears, and you go with 4.56 gears, you won`t notice much of an improvement. You would be better off to go with 4.88 gears. I have 4.88 gears and 37'' tires on my 86 4Runner and they work great.

The axle code is on the bottom of the door jamb sticker,4.56 gears are noted as "G252" or "G254" depending on whether you have 2 pinion or 4 pinion carrier. The 4.10 gear set should be noted as "G282" or "G284".

Having a manual or automatic transmission makes a difference on what gears you'll want to use for a given size tire. If you stick with 31's, the 4.56 gear set should work well for you.

G282/G284 is 4.30's. 4.10's are G292/G294

yep, 4.10's. just like i expected. oh well. i was curious anyway...

and 4.56's came with a 31" tire package, so i really don't think is was common in the automatic 22re...
