New here and need some help! I picked up an 86 truck with a straight axle conversion and 3" body lift. my front springs were flat, so i got a set at the local salvage yard. Just finished installing and didn't expect the extra 3" lift! I know I will probably have to adjust my pinion angle with some shims, but my main concern is that my drag link hits the rear u bolt when the steering is turned right. the angle seems real steap. Is there a longer pitman arm or other fix to reduce the angle and fix this problem? I also need to add some lift to the rear as I am 3" high in the front now. Thanks for any advice!
I failed to mention power steering has been added to this truck. It has a rancho dual shock steering stabilizer installed as well as new rancho shocks and hoops for 6" of lift.

 

From your description, it sounds like you have a push-pull steering setup from an '85 or earlier truck. If so, you'll likely need a dropped drag link, I think the one I used to run is from Superlift:


Could also be the spring pack you installed is too thick. With a dropped drag link you can also consider flipping the ball stud on the driver's side steering arm (ball on top instead of below) for added clearance. Or install crossover steering and get rid of the stock setup:

Thanks, I am checking on the droped drag link. Is it possibe to flip the ball joint on the stock link? It would clear the ubolt. I will post a pic later today.

 

So how do you get the steering arm higher or out of the way outside of taking out a leaf? Is crossover the only way?

 

That is what flipping the ball does for you. It puts the drag link on top instead of under the steering arm

 

I understand how to remove the drag link, but what tools are needed to flip the ball. I worked a little tonight, but the rain washed me out (no pun intended). Do I need to remove it and take it to a shop with a press?

Plus you need an adjustable drag link in order to be able to turn the socket on one end of it 180 degrees.
