Slipping gears

Slipping gears
I was using my 91 to haul some wood(a trailer with maybe 1200pounds), any way the shifter popped from 4th into neutral, didn't do it again then when we got home coming down the driveway it popped out of first twice, I will go ahead and change the clutch fluid and take it from there. Would the gear oil in the tranny have an affect on this problem? That could be changed to.

shifter bushing is not going to help....lol
you have a syncro going bad in your trans. It will only get worse.
prepare for inevitable rebuild. or drive it like it is...unless it annoys you.
little bits of the brass syncro are making there way around inside your trans. not desirable.

unless the shifter has slop...the bushing is a waste of time.
by the time it pops out of gear on its own....the syncro is toast. nothing on earth short of a new syncro will make it any better.

if you look in a hanes shop manual it show 11 reasons to cause a gear to jump but i'm thinking if your gears dont grind its not syncro's maybe and something loose or bent???? if your super lucky might be on the outside. cant copy that right now;-(

Toyota maunals like to eat input shaft bearings and synchros in time. Every brand had their certain things that always go...in time you learn each model and years quirks.

Thanks for all the advise guys, the shifter does not have slop and haven't been grinding, except during that last trip it popped into neutral and I grinded it a little hunting for third, it will want to grind sometimes putting it in reverse, I solve that by putting in first then back to reverse, I bled the clutch. So I will see how it goes, do some driving close to home and I will check back.

As the bearings wear this starts to happen.Stop and fix it now or just plan on getting another transmission.
The longer you drive the more damage gets done.
As the bearing wears it allows the shafts and the gears on the shafts to move changing how the gears mesh.

I did some research, and yes it would be better to rebuild my present unit, a friend of mine who is a very good mechanic, said it won't hurt anything to keep using it the way it is, not disregard anyone's advise, that's just his opinion.

My shifter had some slop and would slip out every once in a while...I threw in one of these: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/shifter-parts/heavy-duty-shift-lever-ball-seats
and one of these: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...t-lever-socket
along with some redline mt-90 and it helped a lot...should at least hold over til i can afford a rebuild. But like others have said, you might just be throwing good money after bad.
