Signal Indicator Switch Problems

I've got this problem with my 91 4Runner signal switch. When I go to indicate a right turn, no problem, the signal light on the dash lights up, the actual signals exterior light up, no shorting out sounds and away I go but, when I go to indicate a left turn a couple of things will happen; (1) nothing will happen, the arm moves down and that is it or; (2) it will make a 'buzzing' sound like something is getting fried, or shorted out, in which I have to return the selector arm to the neutural position and try again or; (3) it will actually work but I will have to hold down the arm to keep the connection going. Aside from purchasing a whole new unit from Toyota (which by the way up here in Canada will cost $400.00, I'll use my left arm first before buying a new one!) is there anything else I can do to fix this problem? Has anyone else run into this? I've tried the auto wreckers in the area but none have the part.

I'm sure we can find you the part for a lot less than $400- but I am confused exactly which part you are referring to. Are you saying the stalk itself? From the description it is "stripped" when you try to indicate a left turn.

Several yards here in Denver metro area. I am glad to help you out I have some spare time until my Census work begins again week of 6/21. Provide a part number if at all possible or PM me your VIN # and I will check diagrams over on a website I can not mention publicly...

also do not hesitate to post up in your respective section on Tech forums as many of the regulars kind of avoid Newbie Tech. Get some more opinons I am no mechanic and not pretending to be...

good looking ride in your avatar-reminds me of my old 95 22Re 5 speed.

Thanks for getting back to me. I was wondering why there was lot of 'views' but nobody replied back, but that's ok....lessons learned!
I'm just taking off to a garage, I'm doing the 1 inch spacer mod to the back of my front seats. I'll get my VIN for you as soon as I get back and see what comes of that. Thanks very much for taking the time to reply, your advice and offer to help. The only part number that I can give you right now (from a diagram that was given to me by a Toyota dealer gave me) is 84650, SW, Wiper. I'll reply back when I get back from the garage.
And thanks for the good looking ride comment, I just put on new tires and rims. Mike.

Ha ha...most '60 models are pretty good people eh?
Well finally made it back from the garage/shopping/liquor store in one piece. You know some people are very lucky that we are not allowed to carry sidearms up here, there would have been a population drop in the city today if I had my way! Ok, enough venting for now...

Sorry to hear that your MR2 isn't playing by the rules but, if your in for some good weather until you can get it fixed, all shoud end well eh!
Will you be able to hunt down that piece from the stock number I gave you or would it be easier if you had the VIN?

okay I believe the part number correctly would be 84110 left side of steering column stalk switch

but either way $400 something is pure rape...

i don't know if this will apply to your truck but i will pass it on anyway. i was having trouble with the high beams on a t-100. what i ended up doing was taking the combination switch apart and sanding the contacts with a emery board. after sanding all the contacts i used electrical cleaner to clean everything off. it fixed the problem.

(1) that part number 84110 on the diagram that I have is for the signal switch arm, spring, some type of little bracket and I think a screw.
(2) and yes $400 for that would be pure rape, no doubt and it....that's why I refuse to buy a new one.

Now you see, I was going to try something like that (but your way is much better) but by me knowing me and my mechanical abilities....thought it would be easier just to replace the worn out part. But with saying that, even if I get a 'newer' part, I will still have to rip something apart to replace it so, I might have to break down and start ripping things apart! I really don't think that I could make it worse...thanks for your reply.

you have to pull the steering wheel whether you're replacing or repairing. so you may as well pull it off and try to restore the existing part.

sanding contacts as suggested is a great idea. on little switches or crudded internals, i use that instant jewelry cleaner stuff like you dunk the spoon and it comes out perfect again? that works awesome for window switches.

there's a goood chance someone on this site has a spare one of those for cheapy. look through the classifieds here for someone parting out dead rigs.

Yes sir, you are right about that so I might as well get to it! The more I talk about it, the less fixing is getting done (on Monday, going camping for the weekend). Thanks for the cleaning tips, seeing as my wife doesn't use the jewelry cleaner that often, there should be lots left.
