Shocks for stock height or lifted

Hello everyone. New to 4 runner's and YotaTech. I recently bought a 1990 4Runner for $600 bucks. Its got a bad #5 cylinder but everything else is really nice considering the age. I've done some minor repairs and cleaned it up a bit. My question is...I think that I may need new shocks. When Irun down dirt roads the rear end starts bouncing the the right or left when I hit ripples. If I get shocks, can I install shocks that are recommended for a lifted suspension of about 3" even though it's a stock height now. In the future I plan on spending the money on a lift but don't have the cash all at once now. I really don'twant to buy two sets of shocks.

I would say that you would be alright with extended shocks IF you didn't plan on getting too wild with the 4 wheeling until after you got the lift on. If you flex the suspension too much you could bottom out the longer shock and possibly damage it or the mounting area depending on how hard you bottom out. I'm also new to the 'Yota world but Ive ran longer shocks on Jeeps and full size 4x4s in preparation for a lift and have been fine.

Washboards suck. My rear shocks are fine and it can wander. Usualy 18 psi in the tires fixes it. Somthing 22-23 in compressed should be fine for full bump with stock stops from my cheat sheets. Ive seen a 24.5 compressed but it looked tight, for cheaper option landcruiser rear shocks are a little longer. Longer shocks need a longer brake line to handle the droop.

With the stock bushings and long travel shock some people are tearing an upper mount from the axle after a while so keep an eye on them if you go for 10 in travel, swaybar probley with limit flex at this point as well.

Any recommendations on what brand of shocks? I've read that some will tighten my ride while others soften it too much. Maybe some middle ground shocks for a reasonable price?

Generaly cheap shocks are oe ish ride to a little soft. Its kindof a case of find your budget, look at whats available in that range, and read reviews of similer vehicles. Ive currently got factory tokico's, and they're fine for normal use but suffer once loaded or late for a trail run. Ive been thinking of making the jump straight to rebuildables, hence why the tokicos are still there.

Yo Corey. Is that fifty bucks for all four? How much to ship to 22827? They would be better than the 23 year old shocks that are on there now.

Let me think about it. I'm not sure if I want to go cheap now and upgrade later. Or, just hold out and save for a good set.

Hey guys... And girls. I'm going to be installing my Hella 550 fog lights soon. I'm getting all my ducks in a row. I ordered and received the 00550-35976 switch. I was wondering where the best spot to access and use a key on/off hot wire? Is there a spare spot in the fuse blocks? Oh, it's a 1990 4Runner. How about a spare relay spot? I want to do it as right as possible. Everyone has been super cool with your help and ideas... so, thanks!

Your gonna need to mount a new relay under the hood. You could use a fuse tap off somthing ign or the dash light fuse to power the switch in the cab. Ive been meaning to go back and rewire mine. Do it right and at least add a 6 gang fuse panel for your future accessorys. Inline fuses clutter things quick. And now i kick myself all the time..

Thanks for the input. I just realized that I wanted to start a new thread on this subject but posted it on the previous one. I can't find the start new thread button. Anyways, where can I pick up a new six gang.? Is that a Auto Zone kinda thing or someone a little bit more in to custom stuff?

Alot of people like the blue sea boxes. But search online, marine ones are best for engine bays. Local parts stores might also carry some so have a look.

I like my Hella 8-fuse ATC fuse box
HELLA H84960111 8-Way Lateral Single Fuse Box : Amazon.com : Automotive HELLA H84960111 8-Way Lateral Single Fuse Box : Amazon.com : Automotive
It pictures 3 fuse boxes, but you only get one. It's the one to the right. Good quality and they're dirt cheap!

Cant tell from the ad, is it a common hot type box or individual/jumpered hots? Smokin deal really most 8 place boxes ive looked at were 20 bucks.

For the price I think ill go with one of the Hella's. I don't think I need 8 slots so maybe the 6. I'll be ordering it soon! Thanks!
