Shift Lever Cap

Shift Lever Cap
I'm a long time lurker on yotatech. I can normally find plenty of help just by searching. This time I decided to start a thread.
I'm removing the shift lever from my 1991, 22re, 4wd. I cannot get the shift lever cap off. I'm trying to push it down and rotate it counterclockwise. It will not budge. I can press it in about 1/8th of an inch but it will not rotate. I've tried using needle nose pliers and screwdrivers to rotate it.
Should it be this hard to get out? Any ideas how I can get this out?
Thanks.

You may need to push it down farther to let the pins in the shifter base clear the slot in the cap:

I find I need to use a pair of tools to push down on opposite sides then give it a twist. In my case the fit is very tight as I retrofitted an early W56 shifter (with the cap held in place by 4 screws) to the twist lock kind. Might help to try twisting the cap backwards to make sure the pins are not caught on the lip of the slot.
