SAS info needed

Hey I want to do an SAS on my 86 4Runner and I would like to get about 6 inches wider on my stance mostly so I don't have to put extra stress on ball joints tie rods etc. I'm thinking it could help prevent me from having to use wheel spacers or deep dish wheels. What is the best axle for the job on a budget.

6" ??

Get front and rear from an 80 series land cruiser. That should get you close.

Ditto, stong and wide. If I ever do SAS and plan to go really huge I will use these axles.

How much do LC 80 axles run for? Do you know of any install advantages or disadvantages these have over others.

Since you said "on a budget" LC axles are not for you. Probably just go with a D44, you can get those fairly wide. Whatever you get it out of, just steal the rear out of it too, then you will match, haha.

Why would you need to go 6 inches wider anyway? Seems like the cheapest option would probably be to use n '85 front axle with 1.5" spacers and leave it like that. There was a thread on pirate not too long ago about people running spacers and small backspaced rims. I was surprised how many were doing it.

No such thing as a custom SAS on a budget. For 6" wider, just run Sky's IFS hub conversion for 3" and 3.5" back-spaced wheels, which should get you another 2" (stock are 4.5, IIRC). There - done.

I guess 6 inches wider than what is a good question. As it is you have the wider setup, the '85 front axle is 3 inches more narrow than your rear axle. If you want to run full widths you are basically SOL on the budget thing. If you are wheeling IFS now, there is no reason why you need to be that wide, just SAS, lock, and armor and you will be able to do thousands of things you couldn't before.

If you want to run LC Axles, you cannot do the rear unless you are replacing your transfer case as well. Rear LC axles have an offset diff.

get diamond housings, they're 900 a pop but worth every penny.

Hey thanks for all the info so far. One of the reasons I was looking to get wider without less backspacing or wheel spacers is because of dependability with ifs. The guy who owned this rig before me had 31x1250 on 15x10 with 3" backspacing and it kinda shook things up. I want to avoid putting all that extra pressure on there. The second is for off camber situations. I have a 4" lift on it now and would like to at least maintain that if not go a little more. Thanks again for the info.

Does anyone know how many degrees you can go off camber without rolling over with stock axles lifted 4"?

maybe 25 degrees, maybe 26, 27.......... 28..........

uhmmm.... about 28 degrees

Really depends though. I've pinned it at 30 before. Terrain and luck can make a big difference. But your idea of wider will obviously help with your higher COG. I don't think there is a standard degree of off camber any rig can handle, let alone a global standard for 4Runners.

Just test it like me and you will find out soon enough. :bounce2:
