Rust

Today, I'm going to look at a 2005 4runner 4wd 4.0. It is from New York and the owner says there is rust....I'm from AZ and fortunately haven't had to deal with rust issues.
The owner says it has been checked out by a mechanic and the rust isn't causing any major issues. It has 200,000 miles and is apparently in good mechanical condition.

My question: What should I look for regarding rust on this 4runner? Any help is much appreciated.

I would be leery.

I was stationed in upstate NY. Yep been bit in the butt three times. The amount of road salt is astronomical, if course more in some regions of state than others. Unfortunately it’s rust in areas that are hard to find that can be the biggest issue. Have had to sale cars for scrap with just a year to a couple years on them. They were age you looking at. Maybe frame is still covered by recall, maybe not.

Thank you Muddpigg very much for letting me know your experience.

The reason I'm looking for a 4runner is to replace the one my wife wrecked last year. Had a 2004 4wd and it was awesome. It was wrecked about a year after I did a bunch of work to it (by myself). I kept reading how difficult the struggle is when there is rust on all the nuts and bolts. I was happy to have a rust free truck.

I plan on keeping it for a long time so I guess I should look for one from AZ. Rust free.

Looked at a 2003 2wd yesterday but while I was there another person showed up and offered more than the asking price!

I feel sorry for you.
I spent nearly 30 years in Yuma. Hated it the entire time.
Sorry you missed out on the opportunity, though. I would be very suspect of the frame and suspension of a vehicle from New York. They salt their roads heavily, and unless the truck's underside was treated with rust protection very well, it's going to be solid rust. At least whats left of it.

Be wary of vehicles from "back east"...

Rust sucks. Tap the frame all over with a hammer, more so on the back 1/2 and by the control arm mounts.. Also check the front radiator support...

OP i would definitely stay away from cars that have rust - and as previous posters have mentioned especially if its from the east. i dont think the seller is trying to hoodwink you, but also, there can be rust where you cannot see it until it becomes a very costly issue. i would suggest looking for one where you live for peace of mind.

I did a Mike Sanders Rust prevention, after reading many rust prevention experiences. There are 3 and 5 years comparisons linked.

We all know, that it counts what happens later. Till now I did not see much rust, on my 8 years old cruiser.
