Ok, I need some help. I have a lot of rust on the driver side, and I really need to know if there is a way to take care of it.

 

what kind of rust?

 

sorry if that sounded like a smart ass reply i meant is it like minor surface rust or big rust holes

No your ok, i cant post pictures because linux wont let me...when I figure that out I'll post some. But they are big holes, first and second layer of the underbody....it's not penetrating through the floor but it's there. im pretty sure theres more other places so I want to fix it...

 

eew.. rusty holes? id say cut it out, weld a new patch of metal there, grind it down so its even with the rest of the metal and repaint. im so glad i dont have to deal with rust... i guess i lucked out on that one

cut out a floor panel at the junkyard, just need to get off my butt and fix it..


cutting and welding is probably the best way to do it....

 

man....I dont think that its that bad....but i know that there some rust that I dont want to get worse...I figured I would probably just go and get some sheet metal....cut some spots out and weld it on in. and cover the underbody with por15 or some type of undercoat.

 

yeah, that is my driver's side...passenger side looks like it just came out of the factory....bought it with a leaky windshield and 3 layers of carpeting...

I think you plan will work. I haven't used POR-15 yet but seems like a ton of people here and other forums swear by the stuff....i think Slacker (another trekker owner) must own stock in the company, he is doing most of his running gear/frame with it

 

Yeah, por 15 is great stuff. I have to have this truck in good shape because I will using this truck to go back and forth to school, work, and emergency search and rescue responses I cant have a truck thats in piss poor shape. I have other problems and questions with about this truck, but ppl dont seem to answer my threads...But when its not raining, I will get up under the truck and access the damage, and then i'll buy me MIG and some sheet metal and go to work. Because the bed has some small holes also....

how do you fix small rust bulges on fenders and stuff...? Grind it out, and what else...?

 

get some pics of the cancer on the fenders.. depending on how bad it is might just be easier to get a new fender

 

hate to hijack, but that mounting point in your picture is rotted out on my truck how the hell do you fix that....I mean the body mount is rusted

 

No man....you did not hijack....I believe that you could take a small piece of steel, and if the sourounding area is good....cut out that area weld the steel plate too the good metal, reinforce, and bolt it up....I believe that will work...that's what Im going to do.

 

This product is pretty good as far as rust is concerned. I have read in other forums about people using it to fill in pin holes in body panels (after prep work of course) and then finishing them. You can take the silver product they make and seal windshields and gas tanks with it.

unfortunatly .. thats not a "little bit of rust" .. if you start poking at it .. you'll end up with much more ..

ooo, thats worse than the rust in my truck. when you cut out the bad stuff, make sure you cut all the way to clean metal otherwise the cancer will come back with a vengence and you'll be pissed

I'd like to see how your floors turned out ocdropzone. I have similar rust and that looks like the best way to take care of it.

Any good threads on someone tackling this same problem?
