right rims for a 4runner

i have a 1990 toyota 4runner. i want to get some rims. i want a wider stance but ive been told to stay away from 15x10s if i will be running 31x10.50s. i know someone that has been running 31x10.50s on 15x10s for longer than 26 years and never has had a problem. what experience do you guys have. and also this will probably be a dumb question....but what does backspacing mean. i think i have an idea but im not sure.

thanks!!!
