which rims?

i have a 1990 toyota 4runner. i want to get some rims. i want a wider stance but ive been told to stay away from 15x10s if i will be running 31x10.50s. i know someone that has been running 31x10.50s on 15x10s for longer than 26 years and never has had a problem. what experience do you guys have. and also this will probably be a dumb question....but what does backspacing mean. i think i have an idea but im not sure.

thanks!!!

Those tires on those wheels will work fine. To get a wider stance, you want less backspacing.
I think stock on your truck is 4.5". .
3.5" Backspacing and the wheels will sit out one in more.
2.5" Backspacing, 2 inches out...

Here's a picture of my 4Runner with 31x10.50 tires on 15x8 rims:

If I remember right, the backspacing is 3.75". Could be wrong though.

I think 8 inch wide rims look good on any tire under 12.5" wide. If you go with a 10 inch wide rims, the lip of the tire looks wider than the tread. Looks kinda funny IMHO.

Theses rims definately gave a wider stance than my punny stock tires. Handling has really improved as a result too.

DH6 - If your rims are Mickey Thompson Classic II then the backspacing is 3.25" not 3.75. I have only been able to find a couple of American Racing rims that are aluminum 15x8 with 3.75 backspacing ~ Baja & Diamond. Unless your willing to go with a steel wheel or up to a 16" rim.

less backspacing will make the tires and wheels stick out more, but will also create more stress on your suspension

Ah, great! Thanks for the clarification. I couldn't remember which one it was.

I think having less back spacing looks ug. I think unless you're doing a serious lift, where back spacing may be critical for your safety in keeping the vehicle more stsable, leave the backspacing for your early 80's pimp mobile with hydraulics and gold chains.

Well thats your opinion. im not looking to have a truck where the tires sit completly outside the fender. i just want a wider looking stance. i dont like the stock look of the 15x7.

Do you have the aluminum alloys or the stock steel wheels? I think the stock steel wheels have a slightly wider stance than the alloys by the looks of things. My stock steelies make the outside edge of the tire sit maybe 1/4" outside the fender trim.

I like the tall and Skinny OEM look. Toyota's look Better With the Wheels tucked inside the Wheel Wells. When the Rim is too wide the tires get that Rounded Look to them. I Ran 31X10.5 BFG on the Stock Steel Wheels I Think they are only 7" Wide and It Looked Wicked. Its all about Proportion if they are going to Be Sticcking out the Sides of the Truck make Sure you have plenty Stuck inside the Wheel wells.

people are just telling you not to get a 10" wide rim for a 31x10.5 because thats too much rim and too little tire. if you have a rim thats almost as wide as your tire, its just aesthetically offset. offroad tires look good when they balloon a little bit(i.e. 33x12.5 on a 8" rim). since the rim width is so close to that of the tire, if may appear that the rim bulges out beyond the tire(opposite effect of the tire ballooning) dont know if im explaining it clearly, but you just wouldnt like the rim to look bigger than the tire... width wise (not bling )

i have the stock sr5 rims. im not quit sure what i want to do yet. i do know i want to go wider but im not sure how wide. the first thing i need to do is get rid of the ass sag. need to get some coils for the back. then ill see what i want to do. it helps that i have someone with 15x10 enki rims with 31x10.50 and i put one on my truck and i really liked the look. plus the rim was a fadded gold so it matched my truck. kind of cool in my eyes.

My early pic was kinda sorry. Here's a better picture of how my wheels stick out a bit. I like it, but I wouldn't want them out any more than they are.

My rims are 8 inch, so I get some of the "ballooning" effect. I like the look myself, and they don't stick out too far.

Just my $.02.
