Regearing just the rear

Is it O.K. to just re-gear the rear axle only??

My truck is an IFS front end on 33's

Re-gear, as in rebuild with the same gear ratio? Or are you changing the gear ratio?

Either way, you can just re-gear one axle if you want, but if the gearing is going to be different front to rear, you wont want to use the 4wd at all, until the gears are matching.

No, installing a locker including changing the gear 4:10 to a 4:88.

Front and rear gear ratio must be the same if you EVER plan on using 4WD.

I like it. Get some rear tires which are 19% bigger than your front, and you will always be running downhill to boot!

Stock 4.88 IFS fronts are out there, I see them on craigslist sometimes for $50-100.

x3. regearing one without the other will result in dismal failure. your front will be moving faster than the rear incrementally through gears and RPM's.

Yes, its perfectly ok to re-gear the rear end only.

Its also perfectly ok to drive your truck over to my house, and sign over the title

Yeah you can. I almost bought a truck with different rear gear size. He said he did it for fuel economy. But don't go into 4wd with it. Might as well just do both or none. Otherwise you basically have a 2wd..

Go ahead but if you use 4WD... You will tear that transfer case in half...

or the front diff, my money is on the front diff unless its a chain drive case, but something tells me his is gear drive. but yes you can just change the rear unless you want to use 4wd or plan not to regear the front and never use the 4wd again.

Thanks for the replies, I was searching and could only find info about people regearing the 3rd member and I was getting confused that it was just the rear.
