Quick Locking Hub Question (86' 4Runner)

I have a 1986 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 with the locking front hubs. I'd like to be able to engage 4 wheel drive but for whatever reason i cannot turn the hubs all the way to the "lock" position. The passenger side turns about 90% of the way there, and the drivers side turns about 40% of the way there. I tried hitting them with PB Blaster and using a wrench to turn them but no luck. People suggested that i rebuild them, can i just unbolt the 6 bolts that hold the hub locking assembly on? Or do i need to jack up the truck and remove the wheel first?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

-Brian

You don't need to remove the wheel to get at the hub. Sounds like something is maybe bent or broken inside of them.

Search "manual hub rebuild" I guarantee you will find good pictures and directions on the process of taking those apart and fixing em up.

Not that one, the round shroud, it wont let me get to the bolts behind it.

there are 6 bolts on the hub face. take them out, then you can get to the other 6 bolts on the hub body- you probably don't need to go that far though.

If there is a cover around the hub, may need to remove the wheel to get it off first.

If you want to get it done, get a manual or google it.
