Proper Lift on 1988 4Runner?
#22
Sorry, I know I said I would add pictures when I'm done, but I started painting my truck with the $50 paint job method, replaced the passenger corner light, break work, etc. I also can't find the stock U-bolts online, but I did find a website that will let you manually put in the measurements and you can get the U-bolts. So now I need the exact measurements of the stock U-bolts. Also, I was wondering if I decided to do that +2 add a leaf, will the stock U-bolts still be useful or will I have to buy a larger set?

Just measure the size of the u-bolts you have then then adjust for the difference in length of the block you have now vs. the add a leave(s) you plan to add. Usually u-bolts will have a few inches of threaded length, so just shoot for a bit longer. Stock u-bolts usually have room for an extra thin leaf or two.
And might consider a u-bolt "flip kit", puts the threaded end of the u-bolts up and away from rocks and what not on the ground. Comes with new u-bolts and top-of-the-springs with new spring plates. You'll have to come up with new lower shock mounts, there are bolt-on and weld-on options available. But this will cost you about the same as new stock u-bolts and will work better if you intend to off-road the truck.

I did measure them. The problem I ran into was the measurements (from the inside of the bolt) are 9.5 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, and I can't tell if its 7/16 or 1/2 inches in diameter. The block is 2 inches high, so subtract that from the u-bolt, I'll need a 7.5 long u-bolt. The online distributor http://www.generalspringkc.com/Produ...ctCode=U+bolts sells them in in 5,6,7,8,9, etc, but not in the 1/2 inch differences. I figured somebody on here would know the stock size seeing after all, I do have a Jerry rigged block lift on here. I just prefer to get this correct the first time. I got about a week to finish whatever needs to be done before school starts again.

I think the stock is like 12mm or 14mm (1/2" or 9/16") size, I run 5/8" on my truck since I have snapped/stripped 1/2" u-bolts before. You may need to do some minor mods to fit a lager diameter u-bolt, so just get something small enough to fit the holes in the spring plate you have now. Again on length, guess what you need and go up to the next inch increment. A lot easier to cut a u-bolt down if it is too long, much harder to make them longer.

I just went outside and my sockets are 7/8 inches.... which is much larger then the 11/16 or 3/4 socket I was expecting, which now even makes me question if I measured the diameter of the u-bolt rod correctly or even if that is the correct U-bolt to socket used? Or what size U-bolt to get for a stock ridding height.
