Power Steering Issues

I need to replace the power steering pump on my '94 4Runner (3Vze, 4WD), and at this point it has thrown fluid all over my control arms on the right side. So I'm wondering if I should be looking for a leak in the lines or the reservoir as well.

Also, if anyone has suggestions for removing the dirt-ridden grease that was once PS fluid, I'd be glad to hear them.

get some castrol super clean, spray the crap out of the line and anything else that you want to remove grease, wait a few minutes then hose off, repeat as needed

I have the same issue, and for me, the first step of the troubleshooting will be to clean the whole engine compartment with spray-on engine cleaner. And then, ill wipe the pump clean and see how much and from where it leaks over time.

I've been quoted 1400$ for changing the pump and the timing belt. Un-cool. I'll try my best to skip the "pump job". Hopefully, "stop-leak" additive will take care of the problem (Ill believe it when I see it) or it's a slow leak and i'll just have to carry fluid to top it off once in a while. What's weird is that in a week worth of driving, the level of the liquid doesnt seem to have budged. The mechanics were probably trying to make extra dough with me.

Do it yourself... its a great chance to learn about the internals of your truck and really isnt all that difficult.

naw.. i can do it by myself and have before.

The pump issue is a simple one, if all you're doing is changing the p/s pump.

The timing belt is agreeably a little more involved, but doesnt require any special tools. Although intimidating, its really not that bad. However for a first time, plan on at least 1 full day, safer to say 2, just to be sure (in case you need more parts). I can do it in about half a day, but the first time it took me about a day.

I just went quickly through this write-up for a 3.4L.

Sounds complicated to do but I guess I'll read a bit more on it, I should be fine.

Is there a big difference on the procedure for a 3VZE ?

just quickly looking through it, it looks pretty close. Some other guys that may have done it more recently may have some more advice, but that will get you pretty close... And we (the forum) are always here for questions.
