I have a 1986 4Runner and I am getting ready to replace it's original engine, which has 228K on it. I've been researching online about different places where I can get one and the prices...

Some of the places I am considering are westcoastengines.com, http://www.engnbldr.com and possibly http://www.gotengines.com

Does anyone have any info about these sites or does anyone has a recommendation for a different website/place in the bay area?

I am not sure if it's unrealistic, but I am hoping to spend around $1200 for the engine. Please help!

Rebuild it yourself with engnbldr parts.

Depending on location you might find a good local shop to do it.

Thanks! However, I"ve found that in California an hour of mechanic's work costs around $100 , which makes a rebuild a very expensive project. Do you find that there are any website engines that it's possible to trust?

 

ted was extremely helpful at engnbldr. i'm doing a minor rebuild, and got a kit from him.

and don't be scared to rebuild your own engine. there is lots of information on this forum, and a lot of helpful people.

or, you could buy a motor from a junkyard and rebuild it yourself, so you would have very little down time

 

A buddy of mine used Oregon Engine Rebuilders (or something like that) and it was pretty good. We dropped the rebuild in and it ran fine for about 10K miles then lost oil pressure. Turns out OER had hired a joker who machined something wrong. OER warrantied the motor so my buddy got another longblock no charge. You're still out all that work & time though.

Back in 2000 I had mine done by a local guy ... lots of money, no better than a stock motor. Honestly, next time, I'll rebuild myself using Engnbldr parts. If $1200 is your budget, it's your best bet. GL!

 

I'm wrestling with the idea of a reman 22re or rebuilding it myself. I know I could do it with this sites' help but I don't have all the right tools, the space or the time. And everytime I do the math it's about the same if not a lil cheaper to get a reman dropped in. Anyone done business with Outletengines? They are about 3 hours from me.

x2 on NOT using Oregon Engine Rebuilders AKA OER.

Depending on where you are located you might find another yotatech member close to you, willing to help ya put an engine together. If it's your daily driver you might want to consider some extra down time for machining work that you will not be able to do yourself.

 

I'll have to send you their name when I get home but I just bought and stuffed a 22r longblock from a company in CA. They listed in eBay, no core charge and I got it shipped to me in Mississippi for $1100 w/ a 1 year warranty.

 

I had a local machine shop completely rebuild mine here in Cali for $1200.00 out the door. I would look for a local place before dealing with shipping and such.

 

Ok, found the info: United Engine in Compton California. They dont show any 85-up 22R longblocks on eBay right now but check back with them if your interested. I know I like mine!

 

If you're willing to spend some more, Jasper engines are supposed to be great.

If your not confident in rebuilding yourself and dont want to chance that the rebuilder used a cheapo gasket set, why not drop in a 50k JDM import? Im not sure how available these are after the tsunami, but i know there are tons on the west coast. I used www.foreignengines.com in WA and have no complaints.

 

I have about 2000mi on an OER motor and it seems ok, but if I had to do it again I would check the price at toy connection in San Jose because I have had good luck with them for parts and because they are local. I wish that I had known about them when I bought my motor. They can save you a pile of money on parts compared to the dealer and they have a ton of used stuff also.

I've had five engines (22r) built by these guys this year (for the same vehicle). The sixth time I went and had it done right by another mechanic. They fixed it free each time, but I was without my vehicle for a week or more each time. My new mechanic said they use cheap parts and did a bad job with the machine work. My first engine blew a head gasket and leaked oil. My second engine blew a head gasket and leaked oil. My third engine lasted less than a month before it blew a head gasket, it also leaked oil. My fourth engine lost the power steering pulley while I was driving. After I got in there to fix it, I noticed MANY loose bolts, it had a leaking freeze plug, cracked block and it leaked oil. The fifth engine blew a head gasket and leaks oil. These guys should be avoided.

 

Has anyone used OER for a 3.0L before? Any luck on repairs if needed?

 

Call Putneys or 22reperformance.com I was looking at rebuilds too and they came up with some positive reviews.
I would do it yourself locally, its not that hard. Just use moly or cast iron piston rings. There is an issue with chrome faced rings and how the clyinders are finish honed that results in massive oil consumption. Get a good torque wrench and a number punch, also do some reading about best practices.

 

OER is junk. Too many issues. And a non-existant "lifetime" warranty. Stay far away from them.
