You can rent an engine hoist pretty cheap, and it would be safer than rigging something with wood and hopping it can hold the weight.

Agree! Don't fab something - dangerous and not worth it.

Just get one at Harbor Freight, use it, then sell it on craigslist (they are cheap there anyway), or...buy one on CL, use it, then sell on CL...consider it a long term rental

x2 on the renting, just have the engine all ready to come out, go rent it for that day, bring it back, and then rent it again when you're ready to drop her back in. Shouldn't be expensive

If you don't have a engine hoist, I at least hope you have an engine stand...

I think you might be able to git-r-dun with some pre chewed bubble gum, paper clips and a roll of duct tape... Wait this isn't Macguyver. FIND A REAL HOIST!!! Either that if you live in the stix like me, find someone with a tractor with a hydraulic loader.

first time I dropped an engine at home it was in a FWD escort. unbolted everything below, then on top, jacked the car up and dragged the drivetrain out from underneath with a sling.

that was dumb.

strongly recommend and engine hoist or something actually meant to do the job.
