Im rebuilding my 22re dont have the cash for an engine lift anyone ever pull without a lift? im thinking about making two A frames out of 2x4 and putting a 4x4 across the center with a wire pulley on it. good idea? Bad Idea?

You can rent an engine hoist pretty cheap, and it would be safer than rigging something with wood and hopping it can hold the weight.

Philbert 08-13-2010 08:20 PM

Agree! Don't fab something - dangerous and not worth it.

Just get one at Harbor Freight, use it, then sell it on craigslist (they are cheap there anyway), or...buy one on CL, use it, then sell on CL...consider it a long term rental :)

PismoJoe 08-13-2010 08:26 PM

x2 on the renting, just have the engine all ready to come out, go rent it for that day, bring it back, and then rent it again when you're ready to drop her back in. Shouldn't be expensive :great:

ok sounds good im hitting up the swap meet tomorrow to see if i can pick one up there if not then cl is next. im pretty excited for this engine to come out. it was my grandfathers truck he gave it to me with 114k on the original engine and i blew it up at 127k...first time i will be rebuilding any engine so here is hoping it turns out well

PismoJoe 08-13-2010 08:34 PM

If you don't have a engine hoist, I at least hope you have an engine stand...

yikes!

A little bird once told me, if you ever need help, it'll help those that might be able to help you to know where you are!!!!!

Rule #1 of car(truck) repair: Never have car(truck) fall on you.
Rule #2 of car(truck) repair: Never have engine fall on you.
Rule #3: If there is any doubt, there is no doubt.
Rule #4: 3 is 2, 2 is 1, 1 is none. (of spare parts)
Rule #5: Every screw-up can be traced back to an assumption.

well around here we got a high tec way of pulling motors its called an oak tree and chain hoist

americanmcss 08-15-2010 09:54 AM

I think you might be able to git-r-dun with some pre chewed bubble gum, paper clips and a roll of duct tape... Wait this isn't Macguyver. FIND A REAL HOIST!!! Either that if you live in the stix like me, find someone with a tractor with a hydraulic loader.

ab_mekanik 08-15-2010 02:12 PM

first time I dropped an engine at home it was in a FWD escort. unbolted everything below, then on top, jacked the car up and dragged the drivetrain out from underneath with a sling.

that was dumb.

strongly recommend and engine hoist or something actually meant to do the job.
