Newbie question- interchangeability
Hello Yotatech,
I have an all original 1982 p/u 2wd 5-speed. I've started yard hopping for parts and pieces and realize these guys are kind of hard to find. I did come across an '84 and '85 parts vehicles at 2 separate locations that had a few good parts and pieces, but before I show up with my bag and coveralls for some salvaging, I thought I would at least ask, are parts year specific or generation specific? I looked throughout the site, but no dice. I figure same motor size, same nuts and bolts sizes, but do exterior components follow a particular guideline? I.e. Found a very non broken windshield on an 84 yota for $35, good price, but will it work?

The basic rule for interchangeability is stay within your trucks generation. 79-83 1st gen, 84-88 2nd gen, 89-95.5 3rd gen, and so on. I have heard of people doing upgrades from newer trucks for stuff like power steering/breaks/transmissions when necessary. I will bet if you introduce yourself in the 1st gen forum and show some pictures of your rig you might be able to get some tips and tricks in there. Welcome and enjoy. Hope this helps.
Also if your haven't already watch the video in the newbie section. It helps a lot and is kinda funny.
Edit: if you plan on fixing her up then you should start a build-up thread. Post lots of pictures and we really really love pictures.
Also when you get stuck you can look back at your thread and feel better because you have come so far. Get these trucks in good shape and do the required work on them they will last damn near forever.

Fantastic
Thanks! I just now got home with the battery, so initial trials and tribulations of the first start will begin tomorrow! I do plan on starting a thread and taking lots of pictures. I've already stalked the thread boards for advise. Glad my grandfather chose to drive a 'Yota verses a jeep!
