Smaller axles, smaller ring and pinion, narrower, spring under, etc.

I would look for a 4WD housing, or endure a lot of trouble.

Forget about using any part of the 2wd axle for a 4wd. Whats wrong with the current axle in your 4runner?

2wd axles with a F code are 27 spline with a 7.5" ring gear 5 lug
2wd axles with a G code are 30 spline with a 8" ring gear 5 lug (non-dually axle only)
4wd axles are all G codes and are 30 spline with a 8" gear 6 lug

2wd axles with a G code will accept most 4wd G code third members**

**Not 100% sure but from what I have learned the depth of the 2wd G code axle housing is shorter than a G code 4wd axle housing. What does this mean? The ring gear may hit the back of the housing of a 2wd G code if you use a 4wd G code third member but this has not been confirmed so far. I have a 2wd G code axle housing and a couple of 4wd G code thirds and I will see if this myth is true or false.

The one that came with your 4Rnr will correspond to the Axle Code on your Vin plate in the driver side door jamb (Depending on your year). It is a 4 digit code starting with a letter. My code is F372 because I own a 2wd so yours should be G---. It should be in the bottom right area of the sticker
