Newbie needs some help

if this is posted in the wrong section, i apologize, and mods feel free to move:

Hello all, new to the site, but not new to forums in general. I was wondering if anyone has experienced what i am dealing with now, any help would be greatly appreciated...

I have a 1995 4Runner, SR5 V6, with about 198k on it, i have been the original owner since day one. Over that past few years i have had some mechanical issues that have had the truck on and off the road for long periods. I just had a mechanic fix the last issue, but now there seems to be some electrical gremlin going on... Here is what i am experiencing....

Ok when the truck is running, all is well, when idling everything works fine. When the truck is moving, in gear and driving down the road, if i use the windows it blows a fuse and the windows, AC and instrument cluster stop working. Also i just noticed that today, when i put the truck in reverse the same fuse blows.

the truck is a 5 speed manual.

Fuse location:
when you are looking at the fuse box, the part the looks like a Tic-tac-toe board, the CENTER fuse on the tic tac toe board is the one that keeps popping

it would be the 10 amp fuse dead center.

As i mentioned, when the truck is NOT in gear, and sitting, i can use the windows fine, no issues, but when i gear and i use the window, it blows the fuse, and same when putting the truck in reverse.

My mechanic had tried swapping the instrument cluster and that didnt have any affect.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? any info would be helpful, thanks in advance and thanks for reading this.

Griffin

Welcome. Unfortunately, your problem is way over my head. Maybe someone with greater knowledge will come along shortly.

look on top of your fuse box and find the name of the circuit the fuse is on. there should be a diagram.

your problem sounds familiar, check and make sure the neutral safety switch (activated by clutch) is not grounding out. when in gear the switch is activated so you cant start the truck, and thus grounding out when in gear causing a blown fuse.

On the backside of the fuse box panel, it has the diagram, it is the Gauges circut, and the fuse is a 10A

I will bring this up to my mechanic, but will this switch cause that fuse to blow? is it on the same circut?

It's really quick and easy to test your alternator and most shops will do it for free. Might want to see if it's not putting out enough voltage and maybe running too many things at once is pulling to much from it.
