Newbie here

Just wanted to say hi. Bought my first ever Toyota two weeks ago, a '91 4runner SR5, 3.0, 5 speed, ADD. Found this site shortly afterwards. Tons of great info, I've learned alot about my 'runner. Thanks to you folks, I'm getting the steering relay rod replaced tommorrow. Also, have found out that the HG service campaign has been done as well. I do have a rather aggressive oil leak, appears to be coming from the front of the engine. Is this something that could have resulted from the HG recall work, and if so, should the dealership repair it on their dime?
Regards, Rick

Hey man, welcome to yt! Where at in MT. are you? I'm in Missoula. I wouldn't count on the dealer repairing your leak though! EDIT: I just realized that your name is so similar to mine!

Welcome.
Oil leaking from the front of the engine is usually indicative of a bad cam seal. Yes, it could have been caused by the HG work. Take a look at your oil filter. It could also be the culprit. As far as getting the dealership to fix the oil leak on their dime.. Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome! 4runnermt, I'm in Columbus,40 mi.west of Billings. Chickenlover, the cam seal is what the tech figured, also. I was dreading the visit, had a bad experience the one time I stopped at this dealership....salesfolks were land sharks. But, it was a whole new world at the service center. Don't believe I've ever been treated with so much courtesy and respect before. Not one argument about the SC work, they do a 28 point vehicle check and I talked with the tech under and around my runner for about 30 min. Answered all my newbie questions, gave me tips for doing my own repairs, etc. I was impressed. These were the issues that I need to take care of.
Their quoted price
1. Power steering reseal. $405
2. Radiator replace $345
3. T-case output seal $100
4. Shift tower bushings $185
5. Brake flush $130
6. Oil leak timing cover and belt $575
7. Replace speedo cable $140-$180

I new about the speedo cable, it jumps around a little, and sometimes buzzes and squeals, drives me nuts. Was thinking about doing this myself,but...? I'll do the radiator, brake line flush, mabe I can tackle the shift tower bushings, buy the way, the tech said it probably would cost less, just a bushing kit and labor, but he priced out a new tower in case that's what it needs. So, what about the other things, how tough a job are they?
Regards, Rick
