new member looking for help on 89 runner

hey guys, new member here had a quick question. i have now had(have ) 5 different 4runners my newest project is a 89 i just picked up. it has 31 10.5 x 15 wheels and i was trying to figure out what is the biggest tire i can put with out a lift, or if I could get a 32 or 33 under the fenders with maybe a rear add a leaf and cranking up the factory torsion bars. i have looked into old man emu kit but wasn't really trying to go all out yet with suspension being that i have the truck being painted and quarters fixed soon. any help would be appreciated thanks ,steve

I agree with mouse, but one quick tip: Don't do add-a-leafs. I had those on my truck for only a few months before they broke in half. Go with a simple block lift instead. They're cheap, and easy to install, and you don't have to worry about axle wrap unless you cram a V8 under the hood

not sure i agree with the "no axle wrap" statement. Lift blocks turn your leaves into an "S", literally. I would do Zuk coils in the rear, then pick up a set of 33x10.50s and mount those on your factory wheels. They will fit stock.

thanks for all your help guys,i looked into the zuk coils, thats probably what i will do for rear and just crank the torsion bars up a bit in front. Here's another issue... mirrors i need a drivers mirror(loose) flops around when driving it is a door mounted mirror ie: bracket extends towards middle of door and i have quarter windows. mirror is chrome and apparently not available through toyota according to dealership. all mirrors on line are smaller and mount at top of door andy advise as to where i might source a mirror from??

The zuk coils ride really smooth, the cranking the torsion bars ride rough. So it might ride like a bucking bronco. Look into Ball joint spacers. SDORI and 4Crawler both sell 1.5" ball joint spacers. Then it will be a little more even on all 4 corners. I even relaxed my torsion bars just a little to soften the ride.

For about $170, you will have a nice little lift and I have 31's, but I could easily get 32's or 33's under there.

I know these aren't the greatest pics to show you , but I didn't do true "before" and "after" pics for the zuk mod and spacers.....

before, no coils or spacers, 29 inch tires.

after, Zuk mod, BJ spacers, 31's...

First, you have to ask yourself why you want bigger tires? My advice would be to stay with 31s unless you really feel you need the 33s. If you move to bigger tires, know that you might end up wanting to regear, which will be another expense. As other's have mentioned 33x10.50s will fit stock, but I think its a lot easier with a body lift.

I say stick with the 31s for now since you have them. Later on you'll have a better idea of what you will be using your rig for, then you can make a better decision as to which direction you want to go with your modifications.

as mentioned 33x10.50s than you will need 4.88 gears
AAL in the rear and ball joint spacers up front...but if your 4runner has the typical 4runner butt sag, better off to replace the springs...

I've got 265/75/16 (~32x10.5) on my 4runner with no lift with some butt sag works out well as long as i keep tires in contact with the ground...I'll eventually re-gear to something...but right now it still does rather well with stock gearing...
