new here

What's up I just got an 86 4runner. Alittle about me is I'm 24 female and have never owned or worked on a truck before although I can do anything on a car. About the truck its a 22r 5 speed. Motor was rebuilt 75k ago. Its definately a little rough around the edges has some minor rust to be fixed on the bed rails and the windshield needs some attention. It had a nasty oil leak which I found to be the oil pump when pulling it apart the seals were hard as a rock. I replaced them but the pulley has a groove worn in it. Should I replace the pulley if so are they still available new? Next question any other common oil leaks to look for? its still leaking I think from the pulley from the groove but can't tell if its leaking anywhere else as there is oil evvvvvvvvvvvvery where in the engine bay the who underside of the truck is caked in oil. Best way to clean a massive amount of oil burned and caked everywhere? a small leak really doesnt bother me much but when I drive it it reaks of burning oil and i cant stand it. Gotta go back to work now but I will be post more and pics later. any advise is very welcome

Spray the engine down with a good cleaner. I use superclean. And then wash it all out (go to a carwash!). Try to avoid spraying your alt, wrap it in a bag or something.

Then you can go from there. I would grab a pulley from a junk truck if yours is bad.

clean everything, then go from there. Then you can see where its leaking.

there is a "kit" you can purchase that has a new seal for the crank and has a sleave that slides over the pulley to eliminate that grove. Best thing to do is wash the engine bay and start looking for leaks from the top and work to the bottom.

X2 there. I bought mine (for a pickup that I had for a while) from Napa and it came with the front main (crank seal) the speedy sleave (goes on the crank to eliminate the groove) and the new seal for the oil pump. Took about 20 minutes to install.

Also a good idea to put a signature in your profile that lists the year of the rig, engine, tranny etc. It keeps you from typing all of that stuff over again. Might not hurt to put your location in there also, you can put it under your avatar.

Oh and don't think you're only going to post up until you get the oil thing fixed...... these 1st generation runners have some sort of magic to them that makes you want to do lots of upgrades and that entails posting here thousands of times.

Welcome to the addiction.

Valve cover gaskets are common leak areas. Tend the leak oil onto manifold and cause burn oil smells. Tighten the 4 bolts on top. Then look right over the manifold there is areas that the oil will pool and keep causing the stink even if you correct the leak. The semicircle inserts that are front and back of the head are leak points too. Both come in some valve cover kits so check before you buy. Try snugging up thore bolts first as 90% of the time that is all that is needed.

Get a FSM, you can down load one for free sounds like your going to need it. Don't have a link bookmarked on this computer but someone posted one earlier today.

Welcome to YT.

Found it ans wasn't even looking http://ncttora.com/fsm/index.html

Oil pan is also common leak site, but that will just cause drive way spotting. Don't over tighten either as these are usually cork type gakets and you can over "fix it" it a worse leak.

Ok so its definately still leaking oil. I ordered a sleeve for the pulley unfortunately I can't drive it until it comes in as it leaked a full quart driving 40 miles today and consuming a quart a day can get pricey. I also ordered a valve cover gasket.

Next weird thing when you first start it (hot or cold) it idles like poo until you rev it then it idles fine.... Ideas. This motor only has 70k on it im going to replace air filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor when i get paid in 2 weeks

Sounds like a good start. The throttle body might need a good cleaning too with all the little holes in it probably wouldn't hurt.
