New block is differnet- help

I recently purchased the block labeled as "new block". My old block (labeled as "old block") was cracked. The problem I am having is my new block is missing 2 bolt holes next to where the oil filter goes. It is also missing 1 hole on the exhaust side (not pictured); however I don't think it was ever being used anyway. I am nervous to start building it incase I need to try and take it back to where I bought it. The green circles show the bolt holes that are not on my new block.

edit: a little more info just incase; the truck is a '89 4wd 22re. I've had it since new and never been rebuilt until now.

Looking forward to a response, thanks

Do you remember taking anything off/out of those bolt holes? what year was the "old block" from? They could be from different "generations" of 22r engines, ie, one pre-'84 the other post-'84. On the exhaust side towards the bottom is there a circle with two smaller half circles attached to either side?

Yes, both blocks have that; I believe it is referred to as the "laser block" or something right?

I can't remember what I took out of there, unfortunately it has been a while since I pulled the motor.

Yeah, laser block.
Do you know if the "new" block is from a 22r?

I am not sure if it is from a 22r. Both blocks say 22r on the block but I know for a fact that my original engine (old block) is fuel injected. I can't say for sure about the "new" one.

It doesnt matter if its a 22r or RE.
They are the same block.
I watched my buddy, Abecedarian, take an 87 22r complete engine, strip it down. Take the 91 22re engine out of his wifes truck and bolt everything together.

Idk what goes in those bolt holes though, But I dont see you running into any problems as long as the shape of the exhaust ports are the same..if your using the same head you had on the old block you should be fine..

Now that I look, Only think thats stumping me is the 2 huge holes the new block has and the old one does not have...

Thanks for you help but why would there be intake ports on a block?

Thanks for the info, mine are the same height (11 1/8") looking at yours, the one on the left has a lot of different casts than the one on the right in your picture and mine, I assume the one on the left is older and probably doesn't have the laser mark on the exhaust side. If that is the case, that is why it is shorter.

Any idea what bolts up there?

They gave you the wrong block. Your "new" block is an 81-84 block. Take it back, and get the correct block or you will run into an unending sea of problems.

Thanks RMA, that helps a lot. I appreciate all your help. I think that my "new" block is infact the exact same, it just doesn't use the bolts that never see use anyway. Maybe they updated the block sometime after 1989.

I am sure he does; however I have the advantage of having both blocks with me at the moment and I can say with 100% certainty that those two bolt holes and one more on the exhaust side are the ONLY difference. On the other hand, the two blocks in your picture are very different, not just the bolts.
