My new motor won't start.

I bought a rebuilt 22RE from Orient Engines for my '88 4runner a while ago.

I installed it, everything went together fine. I had it running for about 5 minutes, then I found a fuel leak and had to take the manifold and stuff off, so I never got a chance to set the timing.

Now that I have it put back together it won't run at all. It cranks over , kind of coughs a little bit, then stops. What are some obvious things I could check?

So far:

I tested the TPS with a multimeter with the instructions on 4crawler, it seems to be ok.

I have gas in the fuel return line and on the spark plugs, so it seems to be getting fuel.

I pulled out one of the spark plugs and cranked the motor over. It sparks. I'm not sure the right way to do this, but it seems to be ok?

The vacuum hoses all seem to be in the right place according to the diagrams.

I'm lost at this point and don't really know what else I can check.

Take off the valve cover and try adjusting the valves. It sounds like the same thing that happened to me when I rebuilt my motor. Search on here for info on how to do it.

obviously its something you did when you took the manifold off to fix your fuel leak. It was running before you took it off and now it wont. Check your ground strap that bolts to the intake and check for vacuum leaks. Make sure all connectors are plugged in. Go back over everything you did when you took the manifold off

Mine did the same thing and all it was was vapor lock. Loosen the fuel bolt on the cold start injector untill it sprays fuel, tighten it back and see if it starts.
