Mechanical Speedo Cable

Hello all,

I am trying to order a replacement speedometer cable for my 1991 4Runner 3vz with factory 5 speed and 4wd. Since I am having trouble finding an aftermarket cable I supposed I will bite the bullet and purchase an OEM one. However I notice that I am having trouble finding the correct part number for the OEM one, as 3 different cables are available for purchase (all without proper picture reference.) I do know that mine should have the steel plate surrounding the cable as that is what bolts to the firewall to guide the cable (the e-brake must be fished through the vacant hole that should come on the plate on the new cable.) At any rate, the pare numbers being presented to me are

8371089181
8371089182
8371089183

the following link is where I am trying to purchase the cable from and am getting no description/luck:

http://www.villagetoyotaparts.com/pr...371089182.html

Does anyone know which one I need? (hooks into mech speedo behind dash and threads onto t-case under body, has metal plate and grommets attached from the factory for install purposes.

Thanks!
Dylan

Go to toyodiy.com and put in your VIN number. You should then be able to search throughout the menus and find the part number for the speedo cable. Then search on that part number at villagetoyota.com and it should pop up the right cable. Most likely the part number has been updated over the last 20+ years. I'm going the same route for my '91 pickup. Looks like its $100+.

Thanks

Thank you for the tip about toyotadiy, this will be a very useful site for me. Do you know by chance if that speedometer cable is the only way the vehicle gets speed information? It seems that different years of the 2nd generation all have different methods of relaying vehicle speed to the computer. Since this runner is being built as a trail rig, if all the cable does is tell me how fast it's going, I will probably stick to the gps. Are there any cons to not using the speedo? As in, will performance/mileage suffer or will I lose any vehicle feature such as ABS or cruise control?

That's what I feared. The outside jacket appears to be in okay condition on the cable. Earlier today I disconnected both ends of the cable and turned the transfer case side of the cable with a drill. Initially the cluster side also turned, but if met with any friction it immediately stops turning. Is it safe to say then that the inner cable is broken or faulty? If so is it possible to replace just the inner cable with a universal one?

Its illegal to drive without a speedo cable cuz it relays the mileage to your odometer and you won't be able to record your trips on your trip odo if you just plan on using GPShack :-P

the R series trans is a little shorter than the w and g and so the cable might be shorter than a 4cyl cable but i believe the hookup on the back of the cluster and the male ends plus the tcase hole are the same as the 22RE design
