Locker, Lockers or swampers?

Hello Toyatech!

I have been researching and researching about my next set of mods and I have posted to ask your opinion. My 4runner is currently modded as listed in my signature. My first question is what will get me farther? a dedicated set of offroad wheels and tires (swampers or similar) or locking diffs?

I am going to be regearing to 4.88s before the spring. while my v6 can keep up with my 285/75/16 tires, i greatly desire having a better gear ratio. (I have already made my choice on gears through much reading on yotatech )

Since i am regearing i know if would be cost effective to do a locker or lockers at the same time. I have read about and am considering getting just an elocker, elocker with truetrac up front, or two truetracs. or maybe just gears, and tires.

Money is an issue but i do want the best for my truck so if i decide to do any of these, i just wont eat

cant wait for your replies!

I'm in a similar situation as you, but i've decided to get automatic lockers (lock-right and aussie) with 4.88 r/p upgrade and hold off on new ires till spring when everything thaws out (in pennsylvania) and i'll be doing wheeling places other than snow-covered fields. your decision though.

what would work better 1 tire in the front spinning and 1 in the rear or all 4 ? sure better tires might help you get farther but they wont help if you don't have traction

why dont you jsut save up for all 3 and do it all at hte same time? that way you get the best of all your choices. but if thats not your cup of tea, do what you think is best

Just do it right the first time a put a Detroit in the rear. Leave the front open for now. Remember you get what you pay for, and being cheap on the rear end is not a place to be cheap.

In order of necessity, for me, is tires (I NEED em, lol), e-lock the rear and 4.88's. If I was in your positition, I would gear and lock, and get rubber later. Your rig will amaze you on the places you will go with the locker/lockers and gears. Then you can save up for the tires, and they'll be the icing on the cake.....

x2, lockers are nice!

I think i would go with the lockers first, but if you tires need replacing now, then get tires.

Doing it right the first time is relative. I would say a Detroit is a step down, and not "doing it right". Doing it right to me is dual ARB's.

However, the aussies will hold up well, and work awesome offroad, minus the few annoying steering issues.

Thank a million guys! Lockers it is. Now I just need to find someone to set up my diffs. I hear ZUK is the man but has anyone shipped a diff to him? is the cost astronomical? i found a guy in chicago who will do it in his garage for $250 per diff for labor and a machine shop thats is quoting $1900 for labor only! and im gonna even pull the diffs for him! I know i need it done right. How do you find someone in your area? or do you ship?

I would wait to lock it till you re-gear. Why pay twice for setup and twice the downtime?

I think buying tires when you have perfectly good ones is wasting money, as is not doing lockers while you're regearing. Being that you live where driving on snowy roads is unavoidable, I would HIGHLY recommend you get a selectable locker - especially if other people (wife, etc) are going to be driving your truck.

$1900 is a bad quote. He must not be familiar with Toyotas and removable third members and is planning on you dropping off the truck.

X2 on gears and lockers. You can upgrade with time and money improve later in life.

Go through PORC on pirates vending page, I bought their house gears X2 and they a laser marked same as Motive with lifetime warraunty to boot. If you go with lockrite (got one in my rear) they'll cover it reguardless of tire size. It was a hell of a lot cheaper going through them.
