all i know is that that seal in the carrier is leaking...not sure what gear though? and was told that the carrier had to be removed and to replace the seal there

Did you read the how-to page I posted above?

Wheels on ground, no lifting involved.

I got my seal from Toyota, never tried an auto parts store. Same on the nut, or you can re-use if you don't mess it up to bad removing it. Probably good to have a new one on hand just in case.

Depends on what seal your changing! Where is it leaking out of? Pictures are worth 1000 words.

There isnt a seal in the carrier, its either the pinion seal or the 3rd seal.

Seriously - you're getting multiple sets of advice here based on what folks think you're talking about, and it's probably confusing the heck out of you...

Do you understand what the 3rd member is? Are you leaking at the flange where the driveshaft meets the 3rd member or where the 3rd bolts up to the axle housing?

This is one of those times when a few pictures would really help.

I don't mean to but a couple shots of the center part of your rear axle from the sides, the bottom and the back can really simplify all the confusing advice you are getting. If you don't know how to upload them, PM me and I'll shoot you my email so you can send them to me and I'll upload them for you so you can get the info you need! At this point it's just a guessing game on what you should listen to and everyone else guessing what might be leaking.

us, you.

the quote the shop gave me specified that the differential carrier is to be removed and replaced and a new seal...so, it must be the pinion seal but that is inside so you couldn't see it right?

If it is leaking around where the drive shaft attaches, then that is the pinion seal. My writeup covers that replacement.

I fit is leaking where the 3rd member (differential) bolts into the axle housing, then that is the seal around the housing. You might first try snugging up the nuts on the studs and see if any are loose. If that does not fix it, lift wheels, pull axle shafts out 4" or so on each side, pull 3rd member, clean and reseal the opening and re-install the 3rd. Re-install the axles and bleed the brakes.

The studs in the housing that hold the third member (differential/carrier) can sometimes begin to pull out which can also cause it to leak. This can be fixed by replacing the studs with bolts.

Pretty easy stuff, even for a rookie:
