knock sound new engine :(
OK this is my first time posting to a forum. here is my issue i have a 1989 toyota 4x4 22re 5 speed. I just completely rebuilt the motor from the ground up everything was replaced with new parts it has an RV cam and it makes a horrible knock only at certain RPMS and only when its warm. The noise is not present at idle but just above idle you can here it. I notice the sound every time I shift or the engine decelerates. the truck does not have a tach but i would say somewhere between 1500 and 2000 RPM. the valve lash is in spec for the RV cam.
Im sure I have forgotten something I hope its not wrist pins or bearings?
any help would be great thank you

If its while shifting or rpm change I would maybe suspect flywheel? Does it make any grinding noises or just a metallic knock? Welcome to YotaTech!

Ha thanks... ok here is the other deal I thought was a seperate issue the engine was balanced but the flywheel doesn't have to be set at a certain point correct? If so I did not see any marks the flywheel was resurfaced and I put a new clutch in.... If I hold the clutch down with the truck in first it will actually slowly creep foward maybe some residual oil? I'm not sure

Oh and no grinding. If it was mechanical I would think the issue would be present at all times? Enless it had something to do with the balancing of the engine not being correct at a certain rpm? I have no idea I'm stumped :/

Did you adjust the clutch after it was replaced ? It sounds like it needs more free play.
my truck has a light knock when shifting also , a friend thinks it might a wrist pin ,but my truck has 250000 on the motor.

I did not adjust the clutch :/ i didn't think it needed to be done.
Ok here is another question when i assembled the pistons the wrist pins were a snug fit but slid right in and used a snap ring to retain the pin. Normally when I have put pistons together the wrist pin has to be pressed in. This is the first toyota engine I have been into haha.
My TPS sensor was also bad and I adjusted the distributor with it unplugged but it seemed to not change a thing unplugged or plugged in other than the annoying hunting idle. I'm beginning to think this was a bad idea. also does the cam gear need to be set different from factory setting with an RV cam?

Oh and the other reason why I ruled out wrist pins is because i can systematically pull plug wires and the sound is present at all times (in that rpm range). If it was a wrist pin... taking the force of combustion out of the equation should stop the knock right? unless they were all bad? haha
