What engine do you have? Assuming it's the 3.4, save yourself $200 and go with the deckplate mod and a TruFlow or Amsoil filter. Good for 5WHP right there. Search "deckplate mod" or look at the tech section for more info.

And ISR mod; or you can get an Airraid mini intake which seems to help too. (in addition to deckplate + trueflow filter)

Agreed, deckplate it, you won't regret it. It's easy and it's worth every dime.

Yeah, you'll be fine.

Many of us run this stuff and there're no issues.

Not at all, it doesn't effect emissions......... I usually just put the deckplate plug in before taking it in.....

Would getting the trueflow w/o doing the deckplate mod be silly? Also would ther be any quick mod to improve fuel economy, the 4Runner is sporty enough for me as it is (I just got a 2000).

Thx

The easiest way to "improve" fuel economy is to go easy on the skinny pedal. Also, keep up on the regular maintenance items.

Yes, sounds good. I guess I should have stated my initial question more clearly. Will doing the deckplate mod adversely affect fuel economy to get the exta HP boost? I currently get 15-17 mpg in town in my 2000 w/ the V6, I would love to get better mpg but don't know enough about how engines work to tell if doing these intake mods will help mpg or just boost the throttle response. I'll bet most people get worse mpg after doing these mods just because they drive more aggressively/faster due to the better pedal response.

Ummm, yes.

In the land of particle physics and psychology, there's a concept of "youse can't get more power without burning more fuel". Well, not totally true, but since you're not compressing the fuel mixture that you have (supercharger or turbo) nor are you increasing the atomization of the fuel (injector nozzles, fuel pressure)... you're gonna have to burn more fuel to make more power.

When you do the deckplate the engine will be able to inhale deeper. That will cause the ECU to add more fuel in order to keep the the A/FR at 14.7:1. More fuel means bigger explosion which is more power.

Now, you don't have to USE the additional power that's available to you, but if you do, it'll cost you in fuel consumption.

Thanks Midiwall, I don't think I will be doing the deckplate, probably just a Trueflow for general engine health. My 4Runner is plenty responsive for my tastes.

'k.... but keep in mind that because of the "elbow" that's talked about in the deckplate mod babble, the 3.4L is starved for air. So, adding a free-flow filter (like the TrueFlow) won't help a heck of a lot unless you can get more air into the box.

Where you'll see a difference is lower in the RPM range when the engine isn't gasping for air. Once you get up higher (probably around 3000rpm) then you'll be in the starvation zone and the TrueFlow won't make a difference since there's not enough air to inhale anyway.
