IFS Does not Flex

Oka, so Iknow that this is probably the most bonehead question that anyone could ask on this site, but w.e. Ill do it anyways..

So i was out wheeling my 4Runner (92 3.0) and I was trying to flex out in the front, and I could not get that IFS to flex past about 1 inch or so. The Rear ohh yea was flexing. But the Front was around close to nothin..

Why is that. is it my shocks, because they seem pretty old. Don't look like they've been replaced in a while, and I dnt have to funds for it right now, because there is other things that need to be replaced. I just couldnt get much out of it..

is that IFS just sucks in general for flexing or what?

Im not an extreme wheeler. mostly I just go through Mud Pits, and Trails out on my buddies property. I'm not a rock crawler, even though I wish I could through a lift on it and SAS it..but doesnt look like thats going to happen anytime soon..what do you guys thinK?
I searched for threads but couldnt see any on this topic.

Thanks,
Josh

ifs was made for a nicer ride quality on the road. sounds to me like you would be a good candidate for ball joint spacers. it will give you better travel and there only about $100 from the forum vendors! hope this helps!

the toyota IFS wasn't made for flex, it was made for comfortability.

only time shock would limit flex is if they're too short...

are you sure you were flexing it right? just asking.

some newbie people think that pulling a front tire up on a stump will flex the front, when in reality it will flex the rear mostly....pulling(well prolly pushing...lol) a back tire up on a stump should yield better IFS flex.

i can make my '92 4runner go bump stop to bump stop at all 4corners...it's honestly not much...

in that pic i'm on the bump stops on the passenger side, and the droop stops on the driver side, driver side tire is obviously off the ground by about 3"

Flex huh well Id say its something I never think of, I've never been wheelin around hangin in there with the big SAS rigs and saying man I wish I could flex more. Im thinking man I cant believe I just went through or over that crazy trail, tree, or giant rock. Start with the ball joint spacers and some longer shocks and you will be hooked on IFS they are so much more easy on the body, and you can really trick them out to be pretty extreme if you have the money. These trucks will go almost anywhere with not much done to them. Have fun and worry about getting through the mud not looking cool flexin for pics.

The sway bar can prevent you from really getting the most "flex" out of your IFS....

you take the sway bar out, it will help on the flex. i have a 4 in bracket lift without bumpstop extensions and this is the best i could get. my sway bar is also removed

Try changing out the old, dry, worn out droop and compression bumpstops.

Your rear is doing all of the work. Try backing up onto it next time.
The IFS will flex when you put the weight on it.

IFS isn't made to flex, the torsion bars really limit travel unless you are driving fast and hit a good size bump. Going slow you can barely notice any travel out of the front end, they are right its mostly the rear that flexes. Ball Joint spacers don't really help travel, yeah you gain an inch of down travel from stock but you also lose an inch of up travel. Making your IFS flex can cost a lot when you start talking about long travel kits. Basically with the stock IFS you learn to be happy with 3 inches of travel pretty quick

Also I removed my sway bar in hopes to get more travel, I was willing to make the sacrifice and have a bit more body roll when cornering.... took it off and I felt no difference on the road, and I saw less than half an inch of improvement over stock. The only real improvement from taking off my sway bar was that my tires don't rub on it at full lock anymore

Nice quote there Cr@aves4wheelin, why don't you quote the ENTIRE part of the post, instead of just a section, i said backing up onto the obstacle will yield BETTER flex.

and HillBilly, you can't cheat like that we're talking stock here, removing the bumpstops is not stock..

i know the 4" lift is not stock either, but everything besides the brackets is stock
