idle racing

Can't figure out why my idle races when I push in the clutch...doesn't make sense. Its not like it has a carburetor on it, the throttle cable doesn't appear to be sticking it almost act like it has a vacuum line or some other freaky thing has gone bad...dunno HELP I don't think its a vacuum line when I push the brake it idles down until I push in the clutch

Whats the master cylinder (a hydraulic system)...have to do with the idle?? I could see the brake booster maybe if the vacuum hose was broke, loose, or disconnected??

Brake Fluid in the booster screws up the seals and causes some random idle issues. Not the first time its happened with a Toyota, typically older ones

So it's actually a defective BOOSTER that's affecting the idle. But the booster failed due to a leaking master cylinder. Just to clarify...

Yes the defective master affected the previously working booster which is also having an effect on the idle while breakg and while engaging clutch

I still think that there is a vacuum leak somewhere, the trucks idle still races when you depress the clutch pedal and its a real pain in the butt when doing in town driving. Truck does great other than that.

How about just how much does the RPM change??

I have this correct you push in the clutch the RPM`S go higher.

You step on the brake pedal the RPM`S go back to normal.

You are removing your foot off the throttle when you push in the clutch??

I can well understand all kinds of RPM issues related to the brake master cylinder . Most often a vacuum leak will increase the RPM.

The only real one with the clutch would be the engine stalling on the cold winter mornings when the clutch is let out to soon.

Curious to see how this plays out.

The RPMs remain the same when the brake pedal is pushed, they don't drop unless I tap the gas, I know its not the pedal or throttle cable sticking. It happens when I push the clutch pedal down and its worse when its cold. Yes I am taking my foot off the gas, I have checked for vacuum leaks and can't find any, it does not cut out when the clutch is released. I had the RPMs jump up too about 3500 to 4000 RPMs the other day and the hose for coolant that goes to the firewall(heater) pop off too. Scared the bejeebers out of me.

If it goes down to normal when steeping on the throttle I think it is the throttle body sticking.

How have you checked that it is not hanging up??

Hi Wyoming9, I have checked it but I am begining to think that the adjustment must be out. There is an adjustment screw that adjust where the plate rests and I am thinking maybe it is too far out. I have gone over the cable, and cable linkage cleaned and greased so I think you may be right it must be hanging up inside, I am on my way out to do that now and see if it fixes the problem. I did a fine tune, timing and plugs, wires and so on Sunday and she is running much better but is still idle hanging in neutral or when the clutch is disengaged and still have to tap pedal to get her to idle down. I also found a leak with one of her coolant hoses and she was losing fluid, I don't think it was helping matters at all. Fixed the hose and burped the system and put a better overflow container on it too. I will get back to you on this

sounds to me like your throttle body is sticking or not closing all the way. Have you taken it off and cleaned it with varsol and your girlfriends toothbrush?

Its always the simple stuff that eludes me...lol. Well after full investigation I have discovered that my gas pedal "appears" to causing the issue, it is not returning completely and looks like its hanging up, I also noticed that the cable going through the firewall looks like its rubbing on the top of grommet in the hole. I tried reposition cable but it didn't seem to make a difference. There used to be some plastic bearing things on the gas pedal bar that goes thru the pedal one left and shot, and one gone. When I push on the pedal it looks like the metal bar is grinding on the interior of the pedal slot. So I threw some axle grease on it to see if it helped...helped but not completely...still hanging up slightly.

I also double checked the adjustment screw on the throttle body and it was where it needed to be, the plate doesn't appear to be hanging up at all its moving quite freely with no drag. I disconnected the cable and checked it for drag (burrs) didn't feel any drag there either. Well thats my report...going to go and check for replacement parts and see what I can find.

Wyoming9, I took a closer look at the gas pedal bracket and have come to realize it was one of those custom homemade jobbers, they almost got it right but its like a 16th of an inch off of where it needs to be so that the cable is level with the hole in the firewall. So what I will probably have to do is go and get the proper rod assembly for the pedal. It looks like they cut or broke off the original eyelet for the throttle cable at the end of the rod so they welded another one on. It is good and sturdy its just off of center, plus the bushings for the rod that goes thru the pedal I told you about are shot. I tried to find the entire assembly online today and just couldn't seem to locate one. Might have to go and check out the wrecking yards this weekend.
