I have a 92 4runner v6 4x4 I recently picked up. The thing drives nice but the idle is too high, around 1500 rpm warmed up. I adjusted the idle speed adjustment screw all the way down with no luck. I'd much rather try to resolve this problem on my own before taking it to a shop, any suggestions on what to try first? Thanks.

Thanks. visually all seems ok, im going to look a bit more extensively today. I've heard of the plug on the side of the throttle body, the real name has slipped my mind, getting dirty or going bad causing a very similar result. Does anyone know how to test the plug, i.e. how much resistance in ohms to be looking for? any more advise is appreciated

 

how cold is it? mines been up that high but only once and it was a cold ass morning.

 

oh its warm, somewhere close to 80 and never below 65.

 

That's the TPS: throttle position sensor. and that could cause your problem. Try adjusting it.

 

Also make sure the O2 sensor wire isn't hanging on or touching the exhaust.

 

im sure i could look it up but if someone could explain how to adjust the tps I'll give it a go.

well to the best of my knowledge I got no resistance in the tps, so I would assume its bad, but if one were to go out in such a manner, would the high idle be the only symptom. Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I don't do much work with electronics of any kind.

i re-checked it, test
#1, vta-E2 showed 810ohms
#2, idl-e2 no resistance
#3, idl-e2 no resistance
#4, vta-e2 showed 810-830 ohms
#5, vcc-e2 no resistance

Sounds like a bad TPS. If so, you would likely have some stored trouble codes in the ECU related to that part:

one last question for anyone who may have replaced a tps, is there a particular brand or place to order one from that anyone could suggest that is a decent part? thanks again.

 

just in case anyone has this knowledge, I called a family friend who owns a shop near-by, described my issue and asked about the tps... he found it odd to not have a c.e.l. showing, anyone have this issue with no c.e.l.?
