Ideas for a 91 pickup

I have a 91 22RE 5spd Manual and I'm looking for some ideas for upgrades. I run 31x10.5R15's. everything is pretty much stock. I just bought a flowmaster 2.25" and Im gonna pickup a K&N intake for it, but other than that, I'm looking for plug and play items that will give me more power. I get on the trails enough to warrant the mods, but its still my daily driver. I'm no uber-mechanic, so I'm looking for a little wisdom. Any ideas?

oh god...

More power or engine longevity, can't have both.

More MPG or worse MPG, can't have both.

If you've answered more power, and less longevity to both of those I suggest you look at a Chevy, Ford or dodge.

There is a reason 22R's go a lonnng time. And there is a reason they get @ 20MPG doing it.

Otherwise, have a look (search) in sub-forum that has a 22RE. I think there are 12.

down shifting while going up hills is just something you have todo alot of times with the 22re. its not a powerhouse even if you do mod it.

Climb hills in 5th gear? WTH?

It's only 2.4 liters. And 115hp. I think that makes it physically impossible.

You do know what overdrive is don't ya kid?

A Dodge Viper, yeah, that's what you need...

even in fullsize trucks you still have to downshift to forth

Dang you're a razzer, Tried! lol. I agree with ya though...

Karnal, I don't expect to get to 256K again with this motor, after doing a few things. That's ok, I will sacrifice a few thousand miles to get LIL bit more out of her.

Far as 5th Gear on Hills... You must be talking "rolling hills", bout 5% grade... Even though you have the pick up, and it's a lil more capable of hitting a lower gear on hills.... it is, as said, still a lil sewing machine, unless you plan a 50+ Horses Mod session with LCE, Engnbldr and or many others who can provide you HUNDREDS OR EVEN THOUSANDS of dollars worth of stuff to accomplish it! lol.

I gained, literally, a whole gear equivalent on MOST hills, with stock gears, by doing the following;

1. LCE 4-1 Header to 2.25 Exhaust, High Flow CAT and Borla Perf. Muffler. 2.25" out the back
2. LCE Cold Air Intake(doesn't matter who from, really)
3. RC Serviced Injectors(Getting them to like new really helped a lot, before I did much else)
4. OEM Plugs, Cap and Rotor
5. 261 CAM from Engnbldr.com..(THIS, along with the ability for it to breath more, is what gave me the lil extra up the hills. I was doing 45-50mph on the Glacier Park Pass on the 14HWY. near Acton, CA.... Now, 60-65, no problem,...BUT IN 4TH GEAR, no way in 5th! lol)
6. All the above with a fresh .20 Over Block and Fresh Head with the proper valve set up, etc... Is really what it takes AT THE LEAST to get it up a hill a lil better in, again, 4TH, NOT 5TH, lol. However, even in 5th, obviously there are hills that it will now make that it would just drop right off, going up them, before. LIL HILLS, not challenging ones, lol.

You could go further and do the Street RV Head from engnbldr and LCE Big Bore Throttle Body, maybe an 82 Supra AFM, different gear ratio to match the 31's.... But even with the stuff I did, it's not cheap. If you were to also include the latter stuff that I just mentioned on top of the previously mentioned, above, as well?.... DEFINITELY NOT CHEAP! lol. Heck, you could maybe drop a 4.0 in there for cheaper than ALL this lil guy would need to really haul arse.....IF you could do all that was required to swap one in, yourself. From what you said, I don't think that's the case, right?

Maybe you should think about selling it or trade toward a truck with a 3.4? Then you can do 80 up the Cajon or Glacier pass, NO PROBLEM!
