I Need A Rear Differential
I'm searching for a rear chunk (third member I guess it's called)for my 95 4runner sr5 v-6 4x4 automatic with rear ABS & ADD
toyota parts departnment said that I have 4.88 gears in the rear chunk.
I would like to purchase one in good condition at a fair price.I have been shoping around here (Griffin Georgia US) for one and have no luck they tell me if they had one it would be between 250 & 350 for the whole thing they will not just sell me the chunk which is what I need but no parts yard have one at this time.I would like it to be trouble free because I cant afford to purchase a bad chunk and waste my money and time I'm looking forward to any responces also some pics of it would be great....please no scammers gear code is ......G144=...G 8"- 14= 4.88.....4= 4pinion
Thanks for your time and help

well I really don't know much about the 3rd but I took the 4runner to a second shop for another opinion about the grinding and bad rotation slop. They said that it's coming from the rear but couldn't pinpoint where from but they did say either the pinion, ring or carrier bearings the one that goes bad most of the time is drivers side carrier bearing but i't hard to tell without going into the diff....these guys are honest and they also do tranny & rear end work for the county I work for so I think thay know more about this stuff than I
now just to comfirm what they said it could be I went for a 10 mile drive yesterday Sunday got home pulled around back did a few things scotched the front wheels jacked up the rear installed jack stands under her with the tires above ground.I then put her in neutral parking break off went to each tire on the rear I rolled them forwards and backwards they roll fine both ways but i feel them binding while rolling I mean I can roll them but during the revolution it gets to a point where it binds up and I have to push past the bind and it rolls free until it binds up again and so on....I also hear a noise in the chunk as I roll the tires forwards & backwards and there is a lot of slop when I put her in R...and D....and I feel the slack when I turn the wheels by hand. The wheels will rotate a lot before I can feel the gears hook up.I also got in the car put her in Drive gased on her to 20, and a vibration started went to 55 and the whole 4runner is shaking to beat the band...I have new U joints breaks and rotors and shoes. The rear wheel bearings are in good condition says the guys at the shop.last Saturday I replaced the front inner & outer bearing and cones thinking the vibes were coming from there and all along it is coming from the rear....I hope that you have some insite now on the problem I have I really don't know what to do now but take the chunk out and look inside to see what maybe wrong ps they also said that my tranny works flawesly for 169,000 miles and gave me a compliment on my ride saying that I have taken care of her and It's a nice ride
Thanks 4CRAWLER for the Q>>>
any suggestions?

Any factory 4.88 third will work - they usually come on 93-95 4runners with autos, some automatic 93-95 pickups had them too.
I Sold both my front and rear 4.56 diffs for 250 bucks... I wouldnt pay more then 150 for a diff.

thanks for the link to yotayard...but they didn't have my rear differential @ this time.........now i'm going to remove my rear differential chunk on Saturday my co workers said that I may be able to see what the problem is when I can look inside the 3rd but I reall dont know much about it I can get the 3rd out of it's housing but I'm just going to have to wing it on what may be wrong hopefully it'll be something easy to repair but it may be a scary bugger ....I can't keep driving her the way she is with all that grinding and vibration going on and I can't locate a used 3rd before the weekend.
does any one have a website that I can look at to knida know what is warn out or what may be binding ect....

well.....update I'm not really sure that the rear chunk is a 4.555 (4.56) according to ZUK some models came with 4.88 gears and I called toyota with the vin # of my truck and they said that the vin really doesn't say what gear ratio is.....so ZUK said to jack up one rear tire off the ground and spin it 10 revolutions and count how many turns the read D shaft turns and there is your ratio..Great advice
Now my friend at work still thinks the rear chunk has no problems and he thinks the vibration is coming from thr rear t-case output bearing sense the companion flange nut was loose and I retorqued it and staked it back.He said that I really dont know how long it was driven in that condition before I purchased it.....man is this getting confusing!..not to mention I have had 2 service shops keep the 4runner all day and one shop said " I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE GRINDING VIBRATION IS COMING FROM"...the second shop said THEY THINK IT'S COMING FROM A BEARING FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS WHICH i REPLACED THIS PAST SATURDAY INNER OUTER & RACES,THEY ALSO SAID MAYBE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS WHICH I HAVEN'T CHECKED YET BUT THEY ROLL SMOOTH WHEN I ROLL THE REAR TIRES BY HAND, THEY ALSO SAID MAYBE THE T-CASE BEARINGS GOING BAD, OR THE BEARINGS IN THE 3RD MEMBER BUT THEY REALLY DON'T KNOW.....
now what I'm going to do tomorrow is remove the drive shaft from the rear t-case output companion flange and lay the D shaft on the ground then I'm going to gt into the 4runner start her up put her in drive and start gasing on it and I get the vibration grinding at that time will it be something in the t-cast? because the tranny & t-case are the only parts in motion.....if no vibration grinding then there will be no problem with tranny or t-case?..
keep in mind that I'm not going to put her in 4H while testing .....now if on vibration grinding i'm moving back to the rear to turn remove the D shaft at the flange and start moving the tires by hand trying to hear of feel any thing strange like binding or grinding if it does these things then I'll for sure have a problem it that area and I'll remove the tires and just spin the hubs with drums it I feel anything like vibration grinding then I'll remove the drums then spin the axel by hand it the grinding binding I'll go deeper and pull the axels and pull the 3rd member and so on ......
so I'm really trying to get to the bottom of what no one has found yet if you guys have any more suggestions please feel free to jump in
I have replaced ...rear U Joints. rear shoes & drums, front inner outer wheel bearings and races. front drivers side cv axel. front center link it looks like a shock but the new one is way larger than the stock one, replaced all shocks, new valve cover gaskets, new plugs wires air filter, changed the tranny & t-case fluid and tranny filter, all front suspension parts are in great shape and the 4runner rides smooth with new tires and ballancing, so you can see that I'm chasing the darn grinding vibration and it's getting old having to work on her just about every weekend sense I purchased July 1st 08
thanks for all the advice

Some tips on isolating driveline noise:
Easiest one is to pull the rear shaft off and drive in FWD to see if the noise goes away or not (if not, it is not the rear shaft).
Also how to determine what gear ratio you have:

I don't know if this means any thing but I just went out to the 4runner to see if I could find some type of gear tag on the rear 3rd...all I saw was a number
45 painted or marked on with chalk @ the rear to the right of the filler plug.I also checked the gear lube and as I was loosening the plug I heard lots of air coming out around the threads and the oil seems low I put my little finger down in the housing maybe 1/2" or so before I got oil on my finger and the differential is still a little warm on the housing after sitting for 2 hours is this normal...I went to the front diff and it's cool as can be but not the rear is this something to worry about?......

Air escaping may be a plugged vent or it may be normal, the vent lets (or is supposed to let) hot air out of the axle then seal up tight to not allow water/mud/dirt to get sucked back in. So if you hears air rushing into the axle past the threads, that is OK, if you heard air blowing out of the axle past the threads, then the vent is plugged.
Sounds like the oil level is low. Good test is to drain it and inspect the oil and the magnetic drain plug for chunks of metal, etc. Then refill with fresh GL-5 oil (~2.5 qts) and see what happens.
Rear diff will get hot with use, front diff will to, but in 2WD, it is not being used, so should not be hot.

Ok 4crawler.....this is what I did today....I droped the rear D shaft and got in the 4runner started her up put her in drive and gased up through all the gears and the tranny & t-case was shifting smooth as silk no noises from bearings in the t-case that I could hear.I think I have eliminated the tranny and t-case @ this point?.....Now I went to the rear and jacked it up and put her on stands removed the tires and drums.I then went to each side and grabed the studs on the hubs and started turning and I feel some clicking the faster I turned them the faster the clicking was.I also noticed that the clicking was not as loud going backwards as it was going clockwise both sides were doing the same thing.....now I also noticed that when I turned the hubs by hand the differential seemed not to be turning is this normal?
I then got back under the 4runner @ the rear pinion flange and started to turn the flange both ways clock wise and counter clock wise and felt no binding or any type of noise from the chunk
Now what is going on here I wonder if I have bad rear wheel bearings on both sides or is the chunk bearings, gears ect are going out?
I put the tires back on the rear installed lug nuts then rolled each side but I didn't feel any clicking noises like I did when the tires were off and I was turning the hubs by hand does the weight of the tires/rims have anything to do with the rear wheel bearings clicking when turning clock wise or counter clock wise?....I turn 1 wheel around part way and then it starts to drag when it does this I noticed this that the wheel on the oposite side starts turning I guess this is normal?........how confusing this is but I know for sure with the 4runner still jacked up rear tires off the ground in D gasing on it the whole 4runner vibrates and grinds the faster the worse it gets and and it's really hard to pinpoint something without another person there to help I have all girls and it's hard to get them out of the house to do any thing and my wife she will help but she says I don't know what to listed for//////
got to love them anyway.............any more advice on this issue???

Normal for the opposite wheel to turn when you turn the other wheel. With an open diff, it'll turn the opposite direction due to the differential action.
See if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. And also drain and inspect the gear oil from the rear axle. Any play in the rear pinion flange? And how to the u-joints on the rear shaft feel? For wheel bearings, noise usually changes in turns, with bad bearing on outside wheel in turn, it'll be louder, when on the inside of a turn, it'll get quieter.

OK rcrawler the rear drive shaft U Joints I replaced about 3 weeks ago and the drive shaft is in phase yokes are in the same position as they were when I removed them
I will drain the differential oil tomorrow morning and inspect the magnet plug and strain the oil.....
I felt no play in the pinion flange the staked nut was tight and appeared to be in good factory condition.....and the clicking noise I heard was in the rear bearing area just behind the studs.I would like to know sense both sides click making the same noise as I turn the hubs (no tires on or drums on just the axel and shoes and bolts holding the break plate and no D shaft hooked up) wouldn't it be rare that both rear wheel bearings be bad at the same time? could the clicking be coming from inside the differential and just magnified along the axel shafts to the hub making it feel like it's coming from the bearings?......well whats really bad is that the shops I took the 4runner to don't know where the problem is either they said just drive it and it should get worse then I will be able to pinpoint the problem...but it's hard driving the 4runner around knowing there is a problem that may leave me on the side of the road and I don't want that
