I need help installing DRL kit
I'm importing my 2002 Tacoma into Ontario, Canada, (4wd, ext cab, 2.7, 5 spd), and they want me to have daytime running lights before registering it.
I wish they'd just let me leave the lights turned on because they come on when you start the truck. They apparently want a DRL kit installed anyway.
I bought a Hamsar 45040 daytime running lights kit.
I need to know specifically how to identify the proper wires to tap.
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Might help to post up what wires you need to tap into.
But best advice is a Factory Service Manual for your year Tacoma. Or, you might be able to grab the DRL stuff off a Canadian Tacoma/4Runner at the junkyard.

I suspect when you start your truck it turns on the normal headlight system and around here they want vehicles to have a DRL system which turns on the highbeam lights at a lower power setting. Supposedly it makes the daytime head lighting more effective. More likely a large bucket of burocratic bunkum if you ask me but they made the rules.
I'm not familiar with the Hamsar kit if you were to post a little more information on what the kit is asking you to hook up too we could probably help a little more.
And actually who is telling you you need that DRL kit? The mechanic doing your safety inspection or some MOT wiennie?
If it is the Mech. they should be able to throw the kit on pretty cheaply if it comes to that... if it is the MOT then try telling them it has DRLs already. If necessary drag the weinie out and demonstrate it to them.

Under the hood....
1)I need to tap the driver's side lowbeam wire close the the headlamp socket assembly
2)I need to tap the high beam wire also near the driver's side headlamp socket assembly
3)I need to tap the positive parking lamp wire close to the parking lamp assembly on the driver's side
4)I have a ground wire (done), a red wire to connect to the positive post on the battery
5)I need to wrap their green wire around the nearest spark plug wire and secure it there with a couple of nylon tie wraps
They say the lights should come on a few seconds after starting the vehicle, and shut off a few seconds after turning the vehicle off

Easy way if you don't have a wiring diagram w/ accurate wire colors is a volt meter to probe the various component connections. For the headlight, turn on alternately the low and high beams and see which wires are the high and low beam:

Same with the parking light, one wire will be 12 volts and the other ground.
If no volt meter, see which wires connect to which pins in the connector:

On a 2002 4Runner the high beam wires are red/yellow, low beam are blue/black. The headlights are ground switched so don't get confused by the always hot wire going in. The parking light wire is green.
If those colours match the Tacoma you should be good to go.

the installation instructions are generic, maybe I should call Toyota, or just have the 'Canadian Tire' mechanic finish the installation when I drop off my truck to have the safety and emissions inspection
thanks
